In short

Himchari is a stop on Marine Drive about 12 km south of Cox's Bazar town, inside Himchari National Park, declared in 1980, where forested coastal hills meet a quieter beach and monsoon waterfalls. The eco park charges entry, though its opening hours are unverified. Allow three to four hours from town for the climb to the sea view, the falls and some time on the sand.

Himchari is a hill-and-beach stop on Marine Drive about 12 km south of Cox's Bazar town, in Cox's Bazar Sadar upazila, Bangladesh. It suits travellers who want a short climb to a sea view, a look at monsoon waterfalls and a quieter beach without leaving the Cox's Bazar area.

A protected hill forest declared in 1980

Himchari National Park is a protected hill forest of about 1,729 hectares, declared on 15 February 1980 under the Bangladesh Wildlife (Preservation) Act. It joins parts of the Bhangamera and Chainda reserve forest blocks and spreads inland across Cox's Bazar Sadar and Ramu upazilas. The visitor area by the road is only a small corner of it.

The hills carry mixed evergreen forest, part of a belt that once ran unbroken along this coast. Records for the park list about 286 bird species, 26 mammals, among them the Asian elephant, and around 117 tree species. Encroachment and hill cutting have reduced the intact forest over the years, but it remains one of the few protected forests near Cox's Bazar.

Staircase to the viewpoint and the rainy-season falls

A long staircase climbs from the entrance to a hilltop viewpoint over the beach and the Bay of Bengal, and that climb is the main reason people stop. Near the bottom, small streams come down the slope as waterfalls in the rains. The largest gives the place its fame; in the dry months it shrinks to a trickle.

The beach below is wide and far less crowded than Kolatoli or Sugandha. A row of stalls at the entrance, known as the Burmese market, sells clothing, snacks and souvenirs.
