Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani flight guide
Ubon Ratchathani, in Thailand's far east, is roughly 1 hour 5 minutes from Bangkok by air. Various airlines fly there from Don Mueang (DMK); two fly from Suvarnabhumi (BKK). The two cities are about 482 km apart.
Ubon is best known for its Candle Festival at the start of Buddhist Lent in July, when temples parade huge carved wax sculptures through town, and for the Mekong cliffs of Pha Taem National Park with their prehistoric paintings. It is also the usual flying route to southern Laos: buses from Ubon's bus station cross at Chong Mek and continue to Pakse. Thai Airways' winter 2026/27 schedule lists 14 Ubon flights a week from Suvarnabhumi.
Don Mueang's Terminal 2 handles its domestic flights, with the Red Line station across a footbridge. Suvarnabhumi is better if you arrive in Thailand on an international flight and want to connect on Thai Airways or Thai VietJet Air. Transport to each is in the Don Mueang guide and Suvarnabhumi guide.
Ubon Ratchathani Airport sits on the northern edge of the city, so most hotels are 10 to 15 minutes away. Taxis work on fixed-fare coupons bought at arrivals, and an airport bus runs via Central Plaza to the bus station, which is handy if you are going straight on to Laos. The terminal is small and quick to get through, with coffee counters, an ATM and car hire desks, and it closes roughly 22:00 to 06:00. The airfield is also an air force base, home to the F-5 fighters of 21st Wing. The Ubon Ratchathani airport guide explains the coupon taxis and the route to Chong Mek.
On Nok Air, Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air and Thai VietJet Air, the cheapest fares include a cabin bag only. Thai Airways includes checked baggage in economy.
November to February is cool and dry, the best time for Pha Taem and the Mekong. The Candle Festival falls in July, in the rainy season, and hotels fill well in advance. March to May is very hot.
Ubon Ratchathani's airfield dates from 1921, when doctors and medicines were flown in during a smallpox and cholera epidemic in Warin Chamrap. In 1955 it became a Royal Thai Air Force base used by the United States and Australian air forces during the Vietnam War.
