Alcobendas travel guide
MUNCYT, the FIBA Hall of Fame and Metro line 10
Alcobendas is a prosperous business suburb just north of Madrid on Metro line 10. A half day covers the free science museum and the basketball hall of fame, and its hotels suit early flights and business trips. Visit between April and June or in early autumn for easy weather. Prices are high, and Schengen rules apply.
Alcobendas is a wealthy northern suburb of Madrid, merged with San Sebastián de los Reyes and separated by the A-1 from La Moraleja, one of the capital's most exclusive residential enclaves. Since the 1980s it has turned from an industrial town into a hub of offices and retail parks, which shapes how a visitor will use it.
Two sights make the trip out worthwhile. MUNCYT, the national science and technology museum near Marqués de la Valdavia metro, mixes historic instruments with hands-on halls that children enjoy, and admission is free. Basketball fans should find the museum of the Pedro Ferrándiz Foundation, home of the FIBA Hall of Fame. For a walk, the Valdelatas nature reserve covers wooded hills on the edge of town.

Getting there
Tres Olivos on line 10, or the C-4 from Sol
Barajas lies only a few kilometres to the south-east, so a taxi is the quickest way in, usually around a quarter of an hour when the A-1 is not jammed. Public transport means a detour through Madrid: Metro line 8 to Nuevos Ministerios and a Cercanías C-4 train north from there, or the Cercanías from Terminal 4 to Chamartín and a change onto the C-4. Metro line 10 runs north to Tres Olivos, where you switch to the MetroNorte section and its four Alcobendas stations; the C-4 from Sol or Chamartín is quicker for the north of town. Interurban buses leave from the Plaza de Castilla interchange.
- Metro line 10
- Change at Tres Olivos; stations at La Granja, La Moraleja, Marqués de la Valdavia and Manuel de Falla
- Cercanías C-4
- Valdelasfuentes and Alcobendas-San Sebastián de los Reyes, direct to Chamartín and Sol
- Taxi from Barajas
- Around 15 minutes outside rush hour
- By road
- A-1 motorway north from Plaza de Castilla
- For Atocha, the C-4 needs a change; check the route before you travel with luggage.
- Long-distance trains into Chamartín connect straight onto the C-4 without leaving the station.
Where to stay
Arroyo de la Vega offices or Valdelasfuentes flats
Hotels here serve the business parks, so choose the district by why you came. Sightseers usually sleep in Madrid and come out for the museum; a night here makes sense for meetings or an early flight.
- Arroyo de la Vega
- Office towers and business hotels along the A-1 near La Moraleja metro; very quiet in the evenings and at weekends
- Town centre
- Around Marqués de la Valdavia and Manuel de Falla, with shops, bars and a short walk to MUNCYT
- Valdelasfuentes
- Newer district beside the Cercanías station, handy for direct trains to Sol
- La Moraleja
- Gated villas with no hotels; only useful if you are visiting someone there
- The Ibis on Calle Francisco Gervás is the budget chain option.
Getting around
MetroNorte supplements and taxis to Valdelatas
The four MetroNorte stations run through the town from La Granja to Manuel de Falla before the line carries on into San Sebastián de los Reyes, and they cover most of what a visitor needs. The two Cercanías stations serve the northern side shared with the neighbouring town. Green interurban buses link the districts with Plaza de Castilla. Distances between the business parks are long, so walking only works within one district, and the A-1 cuts the town in two. A car or taxi helps for Valdelatas, which sits on the edge of the municipality.
- Metro tickets
- Stations are in zone B1, so add a MetroNorte supplement or buy a combined ticket
- Cercanías C-4
- Fast link back to Chamartín and Sol
- Tourist travel passes for zone T are valid on the Alcobendas Metro stations.

Marqués de la Valdavia to MUNCYT, then the Valdelatas pines
Alcobendas' main draw is MUNCYT, the national science and technology museum. Ride Metro line 10 and MetroNorte to Marqués de la Valdavia, give the museum two hours (closed Mondays), then add the FIBA Hall of Fame, a set lunch and a walk in the Valdelatas pines.
Morning: from central Madrid, take Metro line 10 north and change at Tres Olivos for the MetroNorte section, carrying the supplement or a combined ticket. Get off at Marqués de la Valdavia for MUNCYT, which opens at 10:00 from Tuesday to Friday and at 11:00 at weekends.
The collection runs from old scientific instruments to everyday consumer technology of the last few centuries, labelled in Spanish and English, though some rooms only carry an English summary. The big educational hall, with experiments on light, sound and motion to push and pull, is where children tend to stay longest.
Midday: basketball fans can continue to the Pedro Ferrándiz Foundation museum and the FIBA Hall of Fame, then eat a set lunch in the town centre.
Afternoon: if the weather is kind, take a taxi to the Valdelatas reserve for a walk under the trees, then ride the Cercanías C-4 from Alcobendas-San Sebastián de los Reyes straight back to Sol for the evening.
Cocido, calamares rolls and the weekday menú del día
Order the weekday menú del día: two courses with bread, a drink and dessert or coffee, served from about 14:00, and the best value in town. Office workers set the pace, so expect Madrid classics such as cocido, callos and calamares rolls, and an empty business district after work.
Alcobendas eats like the rest of the Madrid region, and on weekdays the rhythm is set by office workers. Near the offices by the A-1, the menú del día is what nearly everyone orders.
Madrid classics fill those menus. Look for cocido madrileño, a chickpea stew with meats and vegetables, its broth served first as soup, and in colder months callos a la madrileña, tripe in a paprika sauce. At bar counters the snack is the bocadillo de calamares, fried squid rings in a crusty roll, and tortilla de patatas comes by the slice with a small beer.
Dinner starts late, rarely before 21:00, and the business districts empty after work. After an afternoon at MUNCYT, eat around the town centre or ride back into Madrid, where the choice is far wider.
