Torrejón de Ardoz travel guide
Parque Europa, an air base and fast trains to Madrid
Torrejón de Ardoz is a commuter town east of Madrid, handy for Barajas airport and Alcalá de Henares. Spend a few hours in Parque Europa and use it as a base for the rest; April to June and the early autumn bring the kindest weather. Prices are high, and Schengen rules apply.
Twenty kilometres east of central Madrid on the A-2, Torrejón de Ardoz is a large commuter town best known for its air base, which shares a runway with a small airport and housed US forces until the early 1990s. It is also home to the EU Satellite Centre and INTA, Spain's aerospace research institute, which says more about the local economy than about its sights.
For a visitor, the draw is Parque Europa, a large park dotted with scaled replicas of European landmarks such as the Brandenburg Gate and the Eiffel Tower, busy with families at weekends. Otherwise Torrejón works as a practical base close to Madrid-Barajas airport, with Cercanías trains into Madrid. The old university city of Alcalá de Henares is a short ride up the same line.

Getting there
Cercanías from Madrid
Torrejón sits on the A-2 motorway and on Madrid's Cercanías suburban rail network. From Barajas, a taxi is the quickest way, since the airport lies just west of town. On public transport, take Cercanías C-1 from Terminal 4 to Atocha and change to line C-2 or C-7 heading east, or ride Metro line 8 into the city and connect there. Long-distance trains and coaches arrive in central Madrid, from where the same Cercanías lines run out to Torrejón.
- Cercanías
- Lines C-2 and C-7 link Torrejón with Atocha and other central Madrid stations
- Barajas airport
- A short taxi ride west; by rail, C-1 from Terminal 4 to Atocha, then C-2 or C-7
- Buy Cercanías tickets from the station machines; Metro tickets are not valid on suburban trains unless you hold a zoned travel pass.
- If you only need a bed before an early flight, a hotel in Torrejón is closer to the airport than most of central Madrid.
Where to stay
Beds by the station, on the A-2 or in Alcalá
Hotels in Torrejón exist mainly for people with business at the air base, INTA, the EU Satellite Centre and the industrial estates. That makes the town a sound choice for one night before an early flight from Barajas, but a dull one for a week of sightseeing. Pick by how you are travelling: near the railway if you rely on the Cercanías, out on the motorway if you have a car.
- Near the Cercanías station
- Walk to C-2 and C-7 trains for Madrid and Alcalá; the most practical base without a car
- A-2 corridor
- Business hotels with parking, close to Barajas and the air base, though you need a car or taxi for everything
- Alcalá de Henares
- Old streets and far more places to eat, a little further east on the same lines
- Central Madrid
- Best for museums and late dinners; Torrejón then shrinks to a half-day trip for Parque Europa
Getting around
C-2 and C-7 trains, taxis out to Parque Europa
The town centre is walkable, but Torrejón is spread out and Parque Europa sits away from the station, so use a local bus or a taxi to get there. For anything beyond town, the Cercanías is the answer: the same lines run west into Madrid and east to Alcalá de Henares and Guadalajara. Driving into central Madrid is slow and parking there is expensive and scarce, so leave the car at the hotel.
- Cercanías
- Trains east to Alcalá de Henares and Guadalajara, west to Madrid
- Taxi
- The simplest way to Parque Europa and to Barajas
Know before you go
What makes Torrejón de Ardoz worth the trip, and what catches visitors out.
Why travelers love it
- Parque Europa's replicas, from a scaled Eiffel Tower to the Brandenburg Gate, an easy afternoon with children.
- Alcalá de Henares, Cervantes's birthplace and a UNESCO-listed university town, a short train ride east.
- Early flights made simple, with Barajas only a short drive away.
Good to know
- Few sights beyond the park; treat Torrejón as a base.
- Cercanías and Metro are separate systems; buy train tickets at the station machines unless you hold a Madrid transport pass for the right zone.

Weather in Torrejón de Ardoz, month by month
Torrejón reaches 34°C in July, and January nights drop to about 1°C under 11°C days. October is wettest, at about 56 mm.
Climate figures are approximate long-term averages for Torrejón de Ardoz 607m (AEMET, via Wikipedia).
Cervantes in Alcalá, then Parque Europa's replica landmarks
Pair Torrejón with Alcalá de Henares. Spend the morning on Calle Mayor, Cervantes' birthplace and the Colegio de San Ildefonso, stay for a tapas lunch, then return for an afternoon among the replica landmarks of Parque Europa. Evenings in Torrejón are quiet, so go into Madrid for dinner.
Morning: take the Cercanías east to Alcalá de Henares, a short ride up the line. Walk the long arcaded Calle Mayor to the house where Cervantes was born, then cross to the Colegio de San Ildefonso, the historic heart of the university that earned the town its UNESCO listing.
Lunch: stay in Alcalá, where bars traditionally serve a tapa with every drink.
Afternoon: come back to Torrejón and spend a few hours in Parque Europa, walking between the scaled replicas of the Eiffel Tower, the Brandenburg Gate and other European landmarks. Children usually want longer than adults.
Evening: Torrejón is quiet once the commuters get home. For a livelier night, ride the C-2 or C-7 into central Madrid and eat in the old streets around Sol.
Early Barajas flights, INTA visits and Parque Europa weekends
Torrejón suits three kinds of traveller: those with an early flight from Barajas, those visiting Alcalá de Henares, and those with business at the air base, INTA or the EU Satellite Centre. Cercanías trains on lines C-2 and C-7 run into Madrid, so you can spend the day in the capital and be back by evening without driving.
The trade-off is atmosphere. Torrejón is a residential and industrial town, and in the evening there is little to do beyond local bars and restaurants. Families get the most out of it, because Parque Europa gives children an afternoon of open space and miniature monuments.
If you want museums, late dinners and historic streets on your doorstep, stay in Madrid or Alcalá instead and treat Torrejón as a place you pass through.

General
Lines C-2 and C-7. The town is about 20 km east of central Madrid along the A-2.
A large park in Torrejón with scaled replicas of European monuments, including the Eiffel Tower and the Brandenburg Gate. It is a popular family outing at weekends.
Not really. Its sights begin and end with the park; for historic streets and museums, ride on to Alcalá de Henares or into Madrid.
It is a Spanish Air Force base that shares its runway with Madrid-Torrejón Airport, used for military and government flights. US forces were stationed here until the early 1990s.
Alcalá de Henares, birthplace of Cervantes, is the obvious stop a short ride east, and Guadalajara is further along the same tracks.
Treat them as workplaces, not attractions. SatCen, the EU agency that analyses satellite imagery, and INTA, Spain's aerospace research institute, explain why so many business travellers stay here.
For most leisure travellers, yes. Alcalá has the UNESCO-listed university quarter, Calle Mayor and a livelier evening scene, and it sits on the same Cercanías lines into Madrid.

Visa & documents
Spain follows Schengen entry rules. Citizens of the EU and of many other countries, including the US, UK, Canada and Australia, can visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period; other nationalities need a Schengen visa. The EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) records non-EU travelers' fingerprints and a photo at the border.
