In short

Amiakhum is a remote waterfall in the Nakshiyang area of Thanchi, Bandarban, close to the Myanmar border, where the upper Sangu forms a series of falls. It is reached only on a guided trek of several days through the Chittagong Hill Tracts, via Padmajhiri or by boat. Any entry fee is unconfirmed, there is no gate, and walking in daylight is advised. Allow three to four days from Thanchi.

The fall lies in the Nakshiyang area of Thanchi upazila, close to the border with Myanmar, on the upper Sangu, which forms a series of falls in this area.

Two main routes lead from Thanchi. One runs via Padmajhiri and Thuisapara over Debata Pahar; the Padmajhiri stretch alone takes six to seven hours of walking. The other, usually easier, goes by boat to Remakri, then on foot past Nafakhum to Thuisapara or Jinapara, and finally over Debata Pahar to Amiakhum. Many groups go in one way and out the other.

The descent of Debata Pahar is steep, and the trek as a whole is long, with hard climbs and descents. It is not suitable for children, elderly people or first time trekkers.

Satvaikhum and Bhelakhum, two more falls on the same river system, lie close by and can be visited with the same guide. In the monsoon the Sangu rises fast: on 7 July 2026 about 90 tourists caught by flash floods in the Nafakhum and Amiakhum areas had to be brought back to Thanchi by boat.

There is no ticket, but permission is given only with a registered guide hired in Thanchi, and groups must register with the local administration and carry ID for checkposts. Rules have changed several times since 2022, so confirm current access before travelling. Winter is the safer season, and the round trip takes three to four days.

Four days from Dhaka via Thanchi and Remakri

Most groups plan four days from Dhaka. A common plan, described in The Daily Star, runs like this: night coach from Dhaka to Bandarban; day one by Chander Gari jeep to Thanchi (about three hours), then boat past Tindu to Remakri; day two on foot via Nafakhum and Jinapara to Husaipara; day three on to Notunpara, down to Amiakhum and back; day four out through Padmajhiri to Thanchi and Bandarban for the night coach home.

The trekking times are long. Remakri to Nafakhum takes about two hours, Nafakhum to Husaipara about four, and Husaipara to Notunpara about one, after which comes the steep down and up section that most trekkers find the hardest. From Notunpara the final stretch to Amiakhum takes about two hours.

Villages along the route offer simple rooms in local homes and food, so there is no need to carry a tent. When The Daily Star published its guide, guides charged about Tk 500 a day and a homestay bed about Tk 150 per person a night, and a Chander Gari from Bandarban to Thanchi about Tk 3,000 for a group. Prices have gone up since, so treat these as a floor.
