Sangu boat trip
The falls are visible from the river between Ruma and Thanchi.
Rijuk is a year-round waterfall that drops about 300 feet from a hill straight into the Sangu River, roughly 5 km from Ruma Bazar in Bandarban, between a Marma and a Bawm village. Any entry fee is unconfirmed, and visits depend on whether the area is open to tourists. Go in daylight, by boat or on foot. Allow half a day from Ruma Bazar.
Rijuk Waterfall is a riverside fall on the Sangu about 5 km from Ruma Bazar in Ruma upazila, Bandarban, Bangladesh, and roughly 66 km by road from Bandarban town. Unlike most hill falls in the country it flows all year, and it suits travellers visiting Ruma by boat or on foot when the area is open to tourists.
The fall faces the river directly, so boats between Ruma and Thanchi pass right by it. Its Marma name is Ri Sung Sung. Notun Rijuk Para, a Marma village, faces the fall across the river, and Rijuk Para, a Bawm village, sits on the hill above.
Water comes off a hill roughly 300 feet high and drops almost straight into the Sangu, broken only by short ledges. It keeps flowing in the dry season, though volume peaks in July and August.
Outside the rains the Sangu runs low and clear, and pebbles and sand show through the water; boats can reach the fall. In the monsoon the river turns brown and fast, and the fall pours so much water that boats keep their distance.
Reach Ruma Bazar by bus or jeep from Bandarban, then walk or take an engine boat. Since October 2022 Ruma has been under shifting travel restrictions. As of June 2025, tourists needed a registered guide hired at Ruma Bazar and checkpoint registration. Confirm the current status before setting off.
