Uluchhari
The trailhead village where guides are hired.
Dhuppani is a tall forest waterfall in Farua union, Belaichhari upazila, Rangamati, reached by boat across the Kaptai Lake system and a guided hill walk, kept quiet because a Buddhist monk meditates beside it. Leave Kaptai before 7 AM for a same-day return and start back well before sunset. It takes a full day, or two with Muppochora.
The fall lies in Farua union in the far east of Belaichhari upazila, Rangamati district, in hills settled mainly by Tanchangya villages. Belaichhari has no road link to the rest of the district, so the area is reached by water along the Karnaphuli and Kaptai Lake and then on foot.
The name comes from Tanchangya: dhup means white and pani means water. Around 2000 a Buddhist monk began meditating beneath the fall deep in the forest. Local people learned of him and started visiting to serve him, and that is how the fall became known beyond the valley. A monk still keeps a hermitage above the water.
The water drops in a single fall of about 150 feet off a sheer, dark cliff into a pool surrounded by boulders. The fall sits at a place called Orachhari. In the rains the roar can be heard well before the fall comes into view, and spray drifts across the pool.
The approach from Uluchhari starts across flat paddy and stream banks, then climbs and drops over forested ridges. Deer, wild boar and civets have been reported in the forest. Near the fall itself, visitors are asked to keep their voices down and not disturb the monk's shelter.
No entry ticket has been recorded. Costs are the trawler, the boat to Uluchhari and a local guide, and photo ID is checked at Belaichhari. July to October gives the strongest water. A single day from Kaptai is possible only with a very early start, so most people spend a night in Belaichhari and walk to Dhuppani the next morning.
