In short

Muppochora is a broad waterfall in Belaichhari upazila, Rangamati, where a hill stream spreads across a wide rock face. Getting there means a trawler across Kaptai Lake and a guided trek, so boat timings shape the day; any fee is not confirmed. Leave Kaptai early and start back before sunset, or stay overnight in Belaichhari.

Muppochora Waterfall is a wide hill fall in Belaichhari upazila, Rangamati district, Bangladesh, reached by boat across Kaptai Lake and a guided trek from Bangalkata. It suits fit travellers who are happy to spend a long day, or better a night, getting to one of the broadest falls in the country.

Kaptai Lake cut off Belaichhari's roads

Kaptai Lake was created when the Kaptai Dam was built across the Karnaphuli for a hydroelectric project, flooding valleys and leaving Belaichhari without a road link.

The trek from Bangalkata

From Hospital Ghat in Belaichhari a reserved boat takes 30 to 40 minutes to Bangalkata. The walk to the fall then takes about two and a half to three hours over hill paths, across streams and through Tanchangya and Chakma villages and jhum fields. Several sections are slippery in the rains, and the trail is not marked, so hire a guide at Bangalkata.

One of the widest falls, fed by a single stream

Muppochora is described as one of the widest falls in Bangladesh, though it has only one stream. Water spreads across a broad, layered rock face and falls into a shallow pool, with ferns and moss on the ledges. July to October gives the most water.

ID checks and staying over

Carry a National ID card, passport copy or similar; it is checked at army camps on the route. A one-day trip from Kaptai needs a very early start, so most groups stay a night. Belaichhari has small boarding houses near Hospital Ghat with basic food, and Kaptai has more hotels.
