Shuvolong Waterfall is a monsoon fall that drops straight into Kaptai Lake at Chilar Dak, Subolong union, Barkal upazila, Rangamati district, Bangladesh, about 25 km by water from Rangamati town. It suits visitors to Rangamati who want a half-day boat trip across the lake between June and October.

On the bank of Kaptai Lake

The fall lies on the bank of Kaptai Lake, which formed behind the Kaptai Dam on the Karnaphuli River when it was built for a hydroelectric project and flooded the valleys between these hills. Subolong is a small bazar on the lake; the name is also spelled Shuvolong or Subalong. There is no road, so the fall is reached only by boat.

Only worth it from June to October

In the monsoon the water falls roughly 300 feet down a steep, forested slope and runs directly into the lake. In the dry months the flow drops sharply and can stop altogether during droughts, so the fall is only worth the trip from June to October.

Hiring an engine boat in Rangamati

Engine boats are hired by the day in Rangamati town. The route crosses open stretches of lake between green hills and small islands, past fishing boats and villages. Parjatan facilities and restaurants stand along the route, and Subolong bazar has snacks and tea. Agree the route, stops and price before setting off, and ask for life jackets.
