Dubai Fitness Challenge and Dubai Run guide

Thirty days of exercise, two closed-road mornings.

In short

The Dubai Fitness Challenge runs for 30 days from late October or early November each year, inviting residents and visitors to exercise for half an hour daily with free sessions across the emirate. The Dubai Run and a cycling morning close major roads to traffic. It suits active travellers; register for the closed-road events in advance.

The Dubai Fitness Challenge is the city government's yearly push to get people moving: a month in which residents and visitors commit to half an hour of exercise a day, backed by free sessions run across the emirate. Two closed-road mornings, one for cyclists and one for runners, give it a public face.

It matters because it turns a private habit into something the whole city does together. Office workers, school groups and tourists share the same start lines, and a road built for commuting is briefly given back to people on foot and on bikes.

Registering for the free road ride and run

Nothing costs money, but the road events are not walk-up affairs. Each needs its own registration on the official Dubai Fitness Challenge website, so anyone who wants to cycle and run fills in two separate forms. Sign up as soon as your flights are fixed and keep the confirmation on your phone. Then decide which distance you are entering: the long highway courses and the short loops draw very different crowds, and it is easier to choose at home than in a start pen.

Keep the rest of the stay loose. The paddleboarding at Hatta needs a car and most of a day. Nearly everything else in the programme can be slotted around sightseeing at short notice.

Thirty minutes a day for 30 days and the fitness villages

The idea behind the challenge is disarmingly simple: half an hour of exercise every day for 30 days. Dubai's government launched it as a city campaign, it has added new events and partners nearly every year, and it treats visitors exactly like residents. You can sign up for a week of your holiday as easily as a local can for the whole month.

The physical heart of the programme is three free fitness villages. Two are municipal, one in Zabeel Park and another in Al Warqa'a Park, while DP World looks after the third, on the sand at Kite Beach. Gyms, beaches and malls add their own free classes, so a morning yoga session on the sand and an evening workout in a mall atrium can both count towards your 30 minutes.

The road days are what people remember. Sheikh Zayed Road normally carries seven to eight lanes of traffic in each direction past most of Dubai's skyscrapers, including the Emirates Towers and the Museum of the Future. On ride and run mornings it belongs to people on foot and on bikes.

Getting there

Before you fly

Check entry rules on our UAE visa page. Register for Dubai Ride and Dubai Run separately on the official Dubai Fitness Challenge website.

From the airport

Dubai International has its own Red Line stations at Terminals 1 and 3.

On event days

The Red Line runs parallel to Sheikh Zayed Road; World Trade Centre, Emirates Towers, Financial Centre and Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall are the stops that matter. With the highway shut, the train is the only reliable way to the start.

Travel light

Carry only what fits in a small belt or pocket: phone, Metro card, water and sunscreen.

Hatta

The dam is in the Hajar Mountains, at least an hour's drive. Public transport is not practical; stay nearby or leave very early.

Where to stay during the festival

Car traffic is kept off the highway from very early, which rules out taxis and hotel shuttles exactly when you need them. A room a few minutes from a Metro station turns a dawn start into a short train ride.

Hotels in the towers beside Sheikh Zayed Road or in Downtown Dubai are the easy choice; a beach hotel far down the coast means a long ride in the dark.

General

No. There is no clock and no ranking, which is why many people walk the course with children or friends. Serious runners use it as a fun run on a closed highway.
