Dubai World Cup guide

A dressy night of racing at Meydan.

In short

The Dubai World Cup is traditionally held on the last Saturday of March, though the 2027 date had not been confirmed by October 2026. Horses from America, Japan, Europe and the Gulf race at Meydan, and since gambling is not permitted, the crowd comes for the sport and the occasion. It suits racing fans; dress up.

The Dubai World Cup is the race that closes the richest single night in Thoroughbred racing, a meeting at Meydan Racecourse that draws horses, trainers and owners from America, Japan, Europe and the Gulf. For the UAE it is the peak of the winter season and one of the dressiest nights on the social calendar.

It is also an unusual day at the races. Gambling is not permitted in the country, so nobody is there to back a winner; the crowd comes for the horses, the clothes and the occasion. The result feels closer to a gala than a betting day.

Buying tickets for World Cup night at Meydan

Keep an eye on the official Dubai World Cup website. Tickets go on sale there a few months before race night, and the range is wide: general admission at one end, then reserved grandstand seats, then restaurants with a view of the track and private hospitality suites at the top. No prices for 2027 had been published when this page was written, so budget loosely until they appear.

Decide early what kind of evening you want. General admission suits a group that wants to roam the lawns and the rail; a grandstand seat guarantees a view of the finish when the crowd stands up for the last race; a restaurant table turns the night into a long dinner with racing between courses.

Sort out a bed next. The Meydan hotel, with 285 rooms looking straight onto the track, is the only place where you can walk back to your room after the last race,. Otherwise, Downtown Dubai and the towers along Sheikh Zayed Road are a short taxi ride away. Give yourself a couple of days either side of race night; late March is pleasant weather for the rest of the city.

The race's history from Nad Al Sheba to Meydan

Nad Al Sheba Racecourse staged the first Dubai World Cup in 1996. In 2010 the race moved to Meydan, which opened on 27 March that year on the same site. The trip is 2,000 metres on dirt, although Meydan raced on synthetic Tapeta from 2010 until the dirt returned in 2015.

Money is what made it global. The purse has stood at US$12 million since 2019, among the largest of any horse race, and the supporting card adds several more Group 1 races with big prizes of their own. The stables that travel in are American, Japanese, European and Gulf-based.

The 30th running, in 2026, went to Magnitude, an American colt who led from the start under Jose Ortiz and finished in 2:04.38. His trainer, Steve Asmussen, had won it once before, with Curlin in 2008. Racing in the UAE has its own character: there is no betting, so the crowd watches for the sport and the occasion, and that changes the mood of the grandstand completely.

Getting there

To the course

Downtown hotels are closer still, but allow extra time: Meydan holds over 60,000 racegoers. Check which gate is nearest your seat or restaurant.

Getting home

When the last race ends, taxi queues stretch fast. Pre-book a car and agree a pick-up point, or stay for a drink until the rush eases.
