Who They Are and What They Charge

Exploring With a Local Guide

In short

bookingMentor lists local guides across Bangladesh, covering Old Dhaka, Sreemangal and Sylhet, Cox's Bazar, the Sundarbans and Bandarban. Half-day rates run from US$20 to US$30 and full days from US$38 to US$55, for the guide only. Transport, boats, tickets and meals are usually paid separately.

Who is on the list

Each profile shows where the guide works, the languages they speak, what they specialise in, how long they have been guiding and what they charge. A good local guide knows which lane in Old Dhaka has the best bakery, when the birds are active in Lawachara and which boatman will take you into the Sundarbans creeks without rushing.

The guides in the cards above have between five and nine years of experience each. All of them speak Bangla and English, and some add Hindi, Sylheti or Marma. Their specialities follow their home ground: heritage and food walks in the capital, tea trails and birdwatching in the north-east, beaches and fishing villages on the coast, boat trips in the mangroves and treks in the hills, where the local guide can also arrange permits. bookingMentor's founder is listed too, for trips around the country.

What a guide costs

A guide in Bangladesh costs US$20 to US$30 for a half day and US$38 to US$55 for a full day on bookingMentor.

Guides in Sylhet and Cox's Bazar sit at the lower end of that range, and those working in Bandarban and the Sundarbans at the top. Each card shows the guide's starting rate.

The rate is for the guide. Transport, boat hire, entry tickets and meals are usually extra, so agree in advance what is included and who pays for what on the day.

Guide, day trip or agency

Book a guide when you want the day built around your own interests and pace. Choose one of the guided day trips shown above when a set route suits you. For a longer journey with hotels, transport and several destinations arranged together, the tour agencies listed here put together full packages.

Before you meet

Use the question box on a guide's page to agree the meeting point, the route and any special needs before you book. In the hill districts of Bandarban, foreign visitors may need permits that take time to arrange, and some upazilas are closed to tourists from time to time, so ask the guide early. Bring cash in taka for boats, tea stalls and small entry fees, as cards are rarely accepted outside the cities.
