Lakkhonchhara is a rocky border stream near Panthumai in Gowainghat upazila, Sylhet district, Bangladesh, fed by a waterfall in the Meghalaya hills of India. It suits monsoon visitors on the Hadarpar boat circuit who want an easy walk to clear water between smooth stones.
The source fall is in the Khasi hills on the Indian side; what visitors reach is the lower stream and its stone channels on the Bangladesh side. The name is also spelled Lokkhonchora. It is one of a cluster of border spots on the Gowainghat boat route, with Bichnakandi and Panthumai.
From June to September the water runs fast and clear through channels of grey stone, with green hills on both sides and the Meghalaya ridges behind. Boulders fill the stream bed and small pools form between them, where people sit in the shallows. In winter the stream drops sharply and stone extraction leaves the channels looking bare, so the dry season can disappoint.
Boats from Hadarpar cover Bichnakandi, Lakkhonchhara and Panthumai in one trip of about five to six hours. Agree the route and price with the boatman before setting off. Lakkhonchhara alone needs one to two hours.
