The two places to celebrate New Year's Eve in Indonesia are Jakarta, which holds the country's biggest party around Bundaran HI, and Bali, where visitors choose between the free Kuta beach countdown, paid Seminyak beach clubs and Jimbaran seafood dinners. Yogyakarta and Surabaya run large street gatherings of their own. This guide to the night of 31 December 2026 covers where to go, how the night actually runs, what it costs, and the traffic and crowd problems that catch first-time visitors out.

For the full overview, read our guide to the best places to celebrate New Year 2027 around the world.

Most international travellers fly into Jakarta (Soekarno-Hatta) or Bali (Ngurah Rai) through regional hubs such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Doha or Dubai. If you are still shaping the wider trip, our guide to places to visit in Bali helps, and if you are thinking of staying much longer, read our notes on expat life in Indonesia.

New Year's Eve in Indonesia: the basic facts

The night falls on Thursday 31 December 2026. The main public parties are at Bundaran HI in Jakarta and on Kuta Beach in Bali. The currency is the Indonesian rupiah (IDR).

How Indonesians celebrate New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve in Indonesia is a public, outdoor night. Families eat together early, often grilled fish or chicken bought from roadside sellers, then head out to the city squares. Paper trumpets (terompet) are sold on almost every corner in the last week of December, and the sound of them builds through the evening.

Faith shapes the night too. Indonesia is a Muslim-majority country, and many families mark the turn of the year at home, at a mosque or at a church service. For the night welcoming 2026, several city governments replaced their official fireworks and concerts with interfaith prayers and fundraising for victims of the floods in Sumatra and Aceh. The big civic gatherings still drew crowds, and they are free to enter.

Bali has its own rhythm. Its Hindu new year, Nyepi, is a day of silence when the airport closes and visitors must stay in their hotels. The 31 December party is a tourist-season event by comparison, and it lands right in the island's busiest weeks of the year.

Holiday crowds and prices around New Year 2027

Indonesia's official 2027 holiday list, set by a joint decree of three ministers in September 2026, is published on the State Secretariat website. New Year's Day 2027 creates a three-day weekend at the end of the Christmas travel season, when many Indonesians head home or to the beach.

For visitors that means busy trains, flights and toll roads in the days before 31 December, and peak hotel rates in Bali and Yogyakarta. Book transport between cities well ahead, and expect the same squeeze on the return trip at the end of the long weekend.

Best places to celebrate New Year 2027 in Jakarta

Jakarta's celebration is spread across several free public sites. The provincial government confirms the programme each December, and as of early November 2026 it had not announced its plans for the night welcoming 2027. Treat the details below as the pattern from recent years and check the city's announcements in the week before.

Bundaran HI and Jalan Thamrin: the car-free night

The Hotel Indonesia roundabout (Bundaran HI) is the centre of the capital's celebration. In recent years the city has closed Jalan MH Thamrin and Jalan Sudirman to traffic and turned them into a long pedestrian zone with music stages, food stalls and light shows. The MRT line runs right along Thamrin and Sudirman, and Bundaran HI station puts you at the roundabout.

The crowd is young, local and very large, and it gets very dense from about 8 pm. People walk the length of the closed road from early evening, stop at stages, and pack the roundabout before midnight. This is the place to see a genuine local street party, with almost no tourist infrastructure around it. Expect to stand, expect to be jostled, and expect very slow movement after midnight.

Fireworks are not guaranteed. For the night welcoming 2026, Governor Pramono Anung's administration dropped the official fireworks at Bundaran HI and staged video mapping, a drone show and a concert instead, as Detik reported. Residents still lit private fireworks around the roundabout at midnight. Whether the official show returns for 2027 had not been announced as of early November 2026.

Monas (National Monument): space to breathe

Merdeka Square, around the National Monument in Gambir, Central Jakarta, is a short walk from the Thamrin strip and gives more room than the roundabout itself. Gambir railway station and the Transjakarta busway both serve it. Families spread out on the grass, and on the night welcoming 2026 the square's fountain show drew a steady crowd. Monas is not always on the city's list of official gathering points, so check the December programme before heading there.

Access gates around the square are controlled on big nights, and the park can close entry once it reaches capacity. Get there by late afternoon if you want open space, and bring water and something to sit on. Most people leave by the same few gates at the same moment, so plan your exit early.

Ancol Dreamland: shows over the bay

In most years Taman Impian Jaya Ancol, on Jakarta Bay in Pademangan, North Jakarta, has staged one of the city's largest fireworks shows, usually set to music, along with concerts and family events. In some years it has replaced the fireworks with a large drone show over Lagoon Beach. It works well for travellers with children because the park has beaches, open lawns and food courts inside a fenced area.

Ancol charges a gate fee per person and per vehicle, and the fee rises on peak nights. The roads into North Jakarta jam badly from the afternoon. If you go, wait an hour after midnight before booking a ride, when the crowd has thinned.

Hotel New Year's Eve packages in Jakarta

The hotels lining Thamrin and Sudirman, such as the Grand Hyatt and Hotel Indonesia Kempinski, sell New Year's Eve dinners with views over the roundabout, and these sell out. Booking one gives you a toilet, a seat and an easy exit, which matters more than you might think by 11 pm.

Packages fall into three types: a dinner-only buffet, a gala dinner with entertainment, and a room bundled with dinner for two. Early listings for the night welcoming 2027 on What's New Indonesia show the range. Hotel GranDhika Iskandarsyah lists its dinner at IDR 429,000 nett per adult, or IDR 2,027,000 nett for a deluxe room with dinner for two. HARRIS Suites fX Sudirman lists a buffet at IDR 668,000 net per person and a stay with dinner from IDR 3,388,000 net per night. Five-star gala dinners on the main avenues cost well above these. Prices marked "++" add tax and service on top.

Best places to celebrate New Year 2027 in Bali

South Bali is where nearly every international visitor spends the night. The three areas below sit close together on the map, but on 31 December the traffic between them is so heavy that you should pick one and stay there.

Kuta Beach: the free public countdown

Bali's biggest free gathering happens on the Kuta and Legian beachfront, close to the airport. People arrive before sunset, stake out a patch of sand, and stay through live performances to the midnight countdown. It is loud, cheerful and crowded, with a mix of domestic tourists from Java and foreign backpackers, and it suits budget travellers and big groups.

Stay near the beach if you choose Kuta, and arrive on foot. Jalan Legian and the beach road become close to impassable by evening. Keep valuables in a zipped pocket, and agree on a meeting point with your group.

Seminyak and Canggu: ticketed beach-club parties

North of Kuta, the beach clubs of Seminyak and Petitenget run ticketed countdowns. Potato Head and KU DE TA are the best-known names, and newer venues in Canggu run similar nights. Tickets go on sale weeks ahead and the popular ones sell out, so book in November if this is the night you want.

Read the ticket conditions closely: some venues require a booking for each guest, close doors well before midnight once full, and do not allow re-entry. For more ideas, see our guide to Bali nightlife experiences.

Jimbaran Bay: seafood on the sand

South of the airport, Jimbaran's beach is lined with seafood cafés that set tables on the sand every evening. On New Year's Eve they add live music and set menus. You pick fish, prawns or lobster from the ice, pay by weight, and eat with your feet in the sand.

For couples, families with older children and anyone who wants a seat at midnight, this is the calmest option. Book a beach table a week ahead, ask for the price per kilo before you choose, and confirm whether the New Year menu is fixed. The larger resorts on the Jimbaran hillside also run gala dinners for guests.

New Year's Eve in other Indonesian cities

Outside Jakarta and Bali, the biggest crowds gather in Yogyakarta. For the night welcoming 2026 the city closed Jalan Malioboro to vehicles, and local media estimated that around half a million people celebrated along Malioboro and at Titik Nol, the zero-kilometre point by the old Dutch fort, according to Metro TV. The Tugu monument and the Alun-Alun Kidul square are quieter places to sit and wait for midnight.

In Surabaya, the city held an interfaith prayer at City Hall instead of fireworks last year, and thousands of residents still packed Jalan Tunjungan, the colonial-era shopping street, as Jawa Pos reported. West Java's governor also skipped an official celebration and held a prayer gathering at Gedung Sate in Bandung, according to CNA Indonesia. We found no reliable reports on public New Year events in Lombok or Labuan Bajo, so check with your hotel there.

Jakarta or Bali for New Year's Eve: which suits you

Choose Jakarta for a free city festival with car-free streets and public transport, and Bali for a holiday-season party aimed partly at visitors, with beach countdowns, paid clubs and peak hotel rates. The table compares the two on 31 December.

A sample New Year's Eve plan in Bali

This plan assumes a hotel within walking distance of the beach in Kuta, Legian or Seminyak, which is the single decision that will shape your night.

31 December in South Bali, hour by hour

  • Morning, beach and errands: Swim, buy water and snacks, and draw cash. Shops and ATMs near the beach get busy by afternoon.
  • 15:00, get into position: Move to your chosen area before the roads lock. After this, assume every drive takes two or three times as long.
  • 18:00, sunset: Watch the sun go down from the beach.
  • 20:00, dinner: Eat at a booked table or a beach warung. Kitchens slow down later as staff prepare for the countdown.
  • 00:00, countdown: Stay where you are for a while; the first half hour after midnight is the most crowded.
  • 01:30, head back: Walk if you can. Ride-hailing prices surge and drivers struggle to reach pickup points.

Before you go: traffic is the main risk to your plans. The stretch from the airport to Seminyak can take hours on 31 December, so do not book an evening arrival flight and expect to reach a party on time. Keep your passport in the hotel safe and carry a copy. Several foreign governments, including Australia, warn travellers about methanol poisoning from adulterated drinks in Bali and Lombok.

What New Year's Eve in Indonesia costs

Jakarta's street celebrations and the Kuta beach countdown are free. Bali's beach clubs and resort dinners are where costs rise: for the night welcoming 2026, general admission at one of Seminyak's best-known beach clubs was listed from IDR 1,000,000, with tables and dinner packages far higher. Prices for 31 December 2026 were not published as of October 2026.

Pay for tickets only through the venue or its listed ticket partner. Jakarta's transport is cheap even on paid nights: Transjakarta has charged a flat Rp3,500 since it opened in 2004, and MRT fares on the north-south line run from Rp3,000 to Rp14,000 for the full Lebak Bulus to Bundaran HI trip.

Where to stay in Jakarta and Bali for New Year's Eve

Location decides the night more than room category. In Jakarta, a room on the Sudirman-Thamrin axis puts you within walking distance of Bundaran HI and of the MRT stations at Bundaran HI and Dukuh Atas. In Bali, stay within walking distance of the beach you want at midnight, and avoid Canggu or Ubud if your party is in Seminyak or Kuta.

Getting home after midnight in Jakarta

Jakarta puts on extra public transport. For the night welcoming 2026, the MRT ran until 02:00 on 1 January, Transjakarta extended key routes to 02:00 with extra buses, LRT Jabodebek ran until about 01:44, and the city made Transjakarta, MRT and LRT free on 31 December and 1 January. Operators announce the arrangements for this year in late December.

Roads around Bundaran HI close to traffic in the evening, so walk to an MRT station. Crowds at Bundaran HI station are heaviest straight after the countdown; walking south along Sudirman to Dukuh Atas often gets you on a train sooner. The free rides never covered taxis or ride-hailing. Bali has no comparable public transport, and walking back to a nearby hotel is the only reliable option there.

Practical tips for New Year's Eve in Indonesia

Check your entry route first. Many nationalities can buy a 30-day visa on arrival (IDR 500,000 as of October 2026), extendable once, but rules depend on your passport, so confirm on Indonesia's official immigration portal.

Book rooms and flights early. Many Bali hotels set minimum stays over New Year, and the best-placed rooms go first. You can search flights into Denpasar and Jakarta from your nearest hub, and read our guide to beating the New Year price surge before you book.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

General

Yes. New Year's Day falls on Friday 1 January 2027 and is a national holiday. The government did not add any collective leave (cuti bersama) days around it, but Isra Mi'raj on Tuesday 5 January 2027 is also a national holiday, so some people take the days in between off.
