Four Seasons Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy, Kuda Huraa guide

Six pros, one reef wave, three boards.

In short

Surf fans will appreciate this small invitation-only contest at Sultans, a right-hander in North Male Atoll, based at Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa. It usually has a waiting period of about a week in early September, with heats run only on good swell days, so flexible plans help. Surfers ride thrusters, single fins and twin fins, rewarding range over youth.

The Four Seasons Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy is a small, invitation-only contest in which six professional surfers ride the same reef wave on three very different boards. It has been held at Sultans, a right-hander in North Malé Atoll, since 2011, with Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa as its home.

What sets it apart is the equipment. A modern thruster suits one style of surfing, while a single fin or a twin fin punishes it, so the event rewards range and tends to bring back former world-tour names who still love old boards.

It is also unusually intimate. The field is tiny, and the surfers spend the week among the other guests, at the break, in the restaurants and at the parties.

Booking a stay at Kuda Huraa to watch the contest

There is no grandstand and no ticket office. Spectators are, in practice, the people sleeping on the island during the contest window, so your room booking doubles as your ticket. Book as soon as the dates are confirmed. Contest week fills quickly, and the water villas are the first rooms to go.

Work out early if you are coming only to watch or to ride as well. The resort has worked with the coaching outfit Tropicsurf for more than two decades, and in 2026 its Surf's Up package bundled four days of coaching with guided boat trips to the atoll's breaks, board use, daily yoga, a post-surf massage at the ŪRJĀ Naturopathy Island spa, breakfast and the return speedboat. The contents change from year to year, so ask the reservations team for the current version before comparing it with a room-only rate.

Think hard about length of stay. Heats are run only on the days with the best swell, so a three-night visit in the middle of the window could miss the competition altogether. Staying for the whole window is the safe bet. If you want to add a second island afterwards, our Maldives destination page is a useful place to start comparing atolls.

The contest's waiting period and schedule

The contest runs on a waiting period. In 2026 the window was 4 to 11 September, the 14th edition, and the organisers needed just three days to finish all three divisions, with no lay days.

Four Seasons had not published a 2027 window when this was written. Early September has been the recent pattern, and the resort tends to confirm the dates and the first invited surfers several months out, adding names over the summer. Watch its press pages from spring 2027 and hold off on flights until the window is official.

Each morning the organisers judge whether the swell is good enough. When Sultans is working, the heats for a division run back to back on the reef, and guests can follow the action from close range. On the off days guests can surf other breaks with Tropicsurf coaches or spend time with the competitors, and the week's evenings are built around cocktail parties at island spots, each with its own private chef. Wikivoyage puts the Maldives surf season at March to October, with the biggest swells in June, July and August. September sits towards the end of that run, so waves are likely but rarely at their largest.

The three board divisions

The rule that defines the event is simple. Every surfer rides every division: a single fin, which needs long, smooth turns; a twin fin, loose and fast, the board of the 1970s and 1980s; and a modern three-fin thruster. Only when all three are done is an overall champion crowned. A surfer who has spent a career on thrusters can look awkward on a single fin, which is why the trophy so often goes to all-rounders and free surfers.

Mark Occhilupo set the tone in 2011 by winning all three divisions and then beating Josh Constable in the Grand Champions Final. The roll of winners since reads like a reunion of former world-tour regulars: Damien Hardman, Taylor Knox, Dave Rastovich, Shane Dorian, Josh Kerr twice, Kelly Slater and Joel Parkinson. Taj Burrow holds the record with three titles.

The best recent story belongs to Michel Bourez. In 2025 he tore a hamstring in the twin fin division, came back a day later to win the thruster division and the grand final, and posted the only perfect 10 the contest has ever recorded. Small fields make moments like that personal. Between sessions the surfers mix with resort guests, so by the end of the week most people know the whole field by name.

To the resort

The resort speedboat to Kuda Huraa takes about 25 minutes and runs at any hour, so a late landing does not mean a night in the capital.
