Bangkok to Male flight guide
Both airlines fly nonstop from Bangkok to Velana International Airport (MLE) in Malé, the Maldives: Maldivian from Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Thai AirAsia from Don Mueang (DMK). The 3,167 km flight takes about 4 hours 30 minutes, and it is a common pairing for honeymoons and resort holidays that start or finish in Thailand.
Maldivian, the national carrier of the Maldives, leaves from Suvarnabhumi with a checked bag included. Thai AirAsia flies from Don Mueang on a low-cost fare that covers a cabin bag only. For a resort trip with dive gear or formal wear, add the hold bag when you book, since airport rates are higher. Bangkok Airways is scheduled to return to the route on 28 March 2027.
Check which Bangkok airport your ticket shows before booking a hotel. Don Mueang serves the north of the city, and the A1 and A2 airport buses (30 baht) bring passengers in from Chatuchak and Victory Monument. Suvarnabhumi is reached by the Airport Rail Link from Phaya Thai in about 27 minutes.
At Suvarnabhumi, some departures board from the SAT-1 satellite concourse, which has 28 gates and sits at the far end of a tunnel of about one kilometre. An automated train covers it in about three minutes including the wait, but security and passport control come first, so do not leave the shops late. Don Mueang passengers coming from the south of the city can ride the MRT Blue Line to Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal and change to the SRT Red Line, which stops at the airport.
Velana International Airport fills the island of Hulhulé. Its new Terminal 1 opened in 2025, a 585-million-dollar building with five times the capacity of the old one and room for 7.5 million passengers a year. The 3,400 m runway has been fully in use since 2022.
Since 2018 the Sinamalé Bridge has joined Hulhulé to Malé and Hulhumalé by road, ending 58 years in which the only way across was by boat. Taxis use the bridge, and public ferries still run for those staying in the capital.
Many resorts send guests on by seaplane from the Noovilu Seaplane Terminal, opened in 2022, which can hold more than 55 floatplanes at once and handle about 1,000 passengers an hour. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so a late landing from Bangkok may mean a night in Hulhumalé or a domestic flight and speedboat. Ask your resort which option it uses before you choose a flight time.
Every traveller, children included, completes a Traveller Declaration on the IMUGA portal up to 96 hours before arrival; it is free. At the border, officers expect a passport with a machine-readable zone and at least one month of validity, a confirmed return or onward ticket, a prepaid booking at a registered resort, hotel or guesthouse, and enough money for the stay. Travellers who have come from a yellow fever risk country need the vaccination certificate. Our Maldives visa page has more detail.
Malé is two hours behind Bangkok (UTC+5 against UTC+7), and neither country changes its clocks, so a midday departure lands in the early afternoon local time.
Travellers starting in South Asia can reach Bangkok on Biman, US-Bangla or Thai Airways into Suvarnabhumi (see Dhaka to Bangkok flights) and take the Maldivian flight from the same airport. A Don Mueang departure means crossing the city and checking in again, so leave at least four hours. Malé also has its own flights to Dhaka: see Dhaka to Male flights.

Getting there
From Suvarnabhumi, one airline flies the route; from Don Mueang, Bangkok's low-cost airport, it is Thai AirAsia. Bangkok Airways resumes 28 March 2027. Schedules change by season, so check the flights for your dates in the search above.
About 4 hours 30 minutes in the air. The two airports are 3,167 km apart in a straight line; actual times vary a little by airline, aircraft and wind.
Both. Maldivian uses Suvarnabhumi (BKK); Thai AirAsia uses Don Mueang (DMK). The airports are on opposite sides of the city, so check the code on your ticket.
Velana International Airport is on Hulhulé island. Malé city is a short ferry ride or drive across the Sinamalé Bridge, and resorts send speedboats or seaplanes, which only fly in daylight, so late arrivals may need a night near the airport.
Yes, Malé also has its own flights from Dhaka; see Dhaka to Male flights. Flying via Bangkok makes sense when you want a stopover in Thailand on the way.
General
The clock moves two hours back from Thai time (Thailand is UTC+7). Neither side uses daylight saving, so the gap stays the same all year.
Yes. Fly Dhaka to Bangkok on Biman, US-Bangla or Thai Airways, all of which land at Suvarnabhumi, then take one of the Malé flights. Booking both legs on one Thai Airways ticket, where available, keeps you airside with your bag checked through. Two separate tickets mean clearing Thai immigration, which needs a Thai visa.
Immigration in Malé checks for a passport with at least one month of validity, a confirmed return or onward ticket, a prepaid booking at a registered resort, hotel or guesthouse, and enough funds for the stay. Officers decide entry at the border, so carry printed copies of each.
Yes. Every traveller, including children, submits a free Traveller Declaration on the IMUGA portal up to 96 hours before arrival and shows it at immigration in Malé.
What's included
It depends on the airline. Thai AirAsia is a low-cost carrier whose basic fares include only a cabin bag, so add checked baggage when you book. The full-service airlines normally include a checked bag; the allowance is shown on your booking.
Stay & facilities
Seaplanes only fly in daylight. If you land in the evening, your resort may use a domestic flight and speedboat or put you up for a night near the airport.
On the full-service airlines, request a Muslim (halal) meal when you book or at least 24 hours before departure through the airline's manage-booking page. On Thai AirAsia, meals are bought online or on board; check the menu for halal options.
Cancellations & changes
Bangkok Airways resumes 28 March 2027. Airlines publish these changes in advance, but dates can move, so check the schedule before you book.
