A long stretch of the trip is by boat along the stream.
Thankowain is a stream-fed waterfall with a round natural pool about 12 km from Alikadam bazar in Bandarban, reached by engine boat on the Tain khal and a moderate two-hour walk, one of the gentler waterfall routes in the district. Any entry fee is unconfirmed, and access rules apply. Start early and return before dark. Allow a full day from Alikadam.
Thankowain Waterfall is a stream-fed fall with a round plunge pool about 12 km from Alikadam bazar in Alikadam upazila, Bandarban, Bangladesh. Reached by boat on the Tain khal and a two-hour walk, it suits trekkers who want one of Bandarban's gentler waterfall routes, subject to current access rules.
The fall lies in forested hills south of Alikadam, fed by the Thankowain jhiri, a small stream flowing into the Tain khal. Beyond the fall the trail continues toward Hajram Para. Damtua Waterfall is also in Alikadam upazila.
Direct buses run from Sayedabad in Dhaka to Alikadam. From there take a CNG or auto through Panbazar to Amtali ghat, then an engine boat up the Tain khal for about two hours to Dochhari bazar, also written Dushori. The walk to the fall then takes about one and a half to two hours over hill streams and rocky stretches. It is considered easier than most Bandarban trails, though rocks near the water are slippery.
Water drops off a rock ledge into a round natural pool ringed by boulders and forest. The fall is moderate in height, but the pool is deep enough to swim when the stream is not running hard; avoid the falling water and high flows.
Visitors must report to the army camp at Dushori bazar and hire a local guide there. As of June 2025, the district limited tourists to approved zones with checkpoint registration, and travel in Alikadam has been restricted at times since 2022, so confirm with the upazila office first.
