Gatineau travel guide
Totem-pole museum, park trails and Hull bistros
The Quebec half of Canada's capital region, facing Parliament Hill across the river, with the Canadian Museum of History and the trails of Gatineau Park. Visit from June to October, or in February for Winterlude; one or two days added to an Ottawa trip works well. Costs are very high, and visa-exempt air arrivals need an eTA.
Gatineau faces Ottawa across the Ottawa River, on the Quebec side of Canada's capital region, and its old Hull sector is a short walk over the river from Parliament Hill. The main sight is right on the bank: the Canadian Museum of History, whose Grand Hall of Pacific Coast totem poles and Canadian History Hall, covering some 15,000 years, deserve at least half a day.
Just beyond the city edge, Gatineau Park gives the whole region its hiking, mountain biking and cross-country skiing, all within about 20 minutes' drive of either downtown. In February, Winterlude spreads into Jacques-Cartier Park on the Gatineau side. Late summer brings a hot-air balloon festival.
Quebec's rules make Hull the livelier place for a drink: the drinking age is 18, and beer and wine are sold in corner stores. Rue Laval and the Promenade du Portage have the bistros and bars, which can get rowdy late on weekends. In early spring, sugar shacks in the surrounding countryside serve meals drowned in maple syrup.

Getting there
Across the Portage Bridge from Parliament Hill
Arrive in Gatineau through Ottawa, since the city has no big airport or main rail station of its own. Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport (YOW) is roughly half an hour by taxi or ride-hail from the Hull sector outside rush hour, and the Portage Bridge leads from Parliament Hill straight into Hull. Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier (YOW) is the airport, roughly half an hour by taxi or ride-hail to the Hull sector outside rush hour; VIA Rail trains from Montreal and Toronto stop at Ottawa station, from where a taxi or the O-Train plus a bus completes the trip. From the Ottawa side, the simplest crossing on foot is over the Portage Bridge from Wellington Street near Parliament Hill, which drops you a few minutes from the Canadian Museum of History. Drivers from Montreal can stay on the Quebec side all the way: Autoroute 50 follows the north shore of the Ottawa River straight into Gatineau in about two hours.
- Ottawa airport (YOW)
- About 30 minutes by taxi or Uber to Hull; no direct bus across the river
- OC Transpo route 8
- Frequent, seven days a week, from Dow's Lake into Gatineau; route 13 adds peak-hour trips from Tunney's Pasture
- STO buses
- Many Gatineau routes stop at Parliament Hill and the ByWard Market in Ottawa
- Intercity coach
- Coaches from Montreal run to Ottawa, then cross by STO bus or taxi; regional buses come down the Gatineau valley from Wakefield
- OC Transpo buses into Gatineau take Ottawa fares and PRESTO, while STO buses use their own fares; check which company you are boarding.
Where to stay
Hull, Lac-Leamy or old Aylmer
Stay in the Hull sector of Gatineau to walk to Parliament Hill in about 15 minutes, often for less than an equivalent room in downtown Ottawa. Lac-Leamy has the casino resort hotels beside the lake, and old Aylmer, further west along the river, is the quiet choice for drivers and cyclists.
- Hull
- Best Western Plus on rue Laurier and Auberge de la Gare on boulevard Saint-Joseph; walk to the museum, rue Laval and the bridges, but the bar streets are loud on weekends
- Lac-Leamy
- The casino and Hilton Lac-Leamy beside a lake east of Hull; resort feel, but you will need a car or taxi
- Aylmer
- Quieter western sector on the Ottawa River with its own old main street, rue Principale; suits cyclists, far from the museum
- Gatineau and Buckingham sectors
- Residential east side on the Rapibus line; cheaper, but little to do in the evening
Getting around
Rapibus, STO and the Voyageurs bike paths
Get around Gatineau on STO buses or by bike, because the city, a merger of Hull, Gatineau, Aylmer, Masson-Angers and Buckingham, stretches a long way along the Ottawa River. The Société de transport de l'Outaouais (STO) runs the Rapibus rapid-transit line, and the Voyageurs bike paths follow the river. The Société de transport de l'Outaouais (STO) runs the buses, including the Rapibus, a bus rapid transit line on its own roadway that links Hull with the eastern sectors, and many STO routes cross into downtown Ottawa. Taxis such as Taxi Loyal and Xtaxi, plus Uber, cover the rest. Cycling is the pleasure here: a large network of paths runs along the Ottawa River, links both cities over the bridges and climbs into Gatineau Park, and Bike Ottawa publishes maps that grade routes for difficulty and traffic. The park itself is about 20 minutes' drive from downtown.
- STO and Rapibus
- City buses and a bus rapid transit line from Hull to the east, with routes into Ottawa
- Cycling
- Riverside and park paths shared with Ottawa; Bike Ottawa maps rate each route
- Taxi and Uber
- Taxi Loyal, Xtaxi, Aylmer Taxi and app rides
- Car
- Easiest for Gatineau Park lakes, Lac-Leamy and sugar shacks in the countryside
- Gatineau Park car parks at the popular lakes fill early on hot summer weekends; go before 9 or cycle in.

Totem poles in the Grand Hall and sunset at Champlain Lookout
Gatineau pairs the Canadian Museum of History with the hills of Gatineau Park. Cross the Portage Bridge from Parliament Hill for the museum's opening, start in the Grand Hall with its totem poles, the largest such collection in the world, then continue to the Canadian History Hall. End the day at sunset on the Champlain Lookout.
Start in the Grand Hall on level 1, lined with totem poles from the museum's collection, the largest in the world, set against a wall of windows that frames Parliament across the river. Then go up to the Canadian History Hall, which replaced the old Canada Hall in 2017 and tells some 15,000 years of history in three galleries, from Early Canada to the present day. If you have children, the separate Children's Museum inside the building can fill another hour or two.
Afternoon: walk the riverside path for the classic view of Parliament Hill, then drive about 20 minutes into Gatineau Park. In summer, swim at Meech Lake or Lac Philippe, or walk the short trail around Pink Lake; in winter, rent skis and follow the groomed cross-country trails. Mackenzie King Estate, the former prime minister's country retreat with its gardens and ruins, is a pleasant stop on the way up.
Evening: watch the sun go down over the Ottawa Valley from the Champlain Lookout at the end of the parkway, then head back to Hull for dinner on rue Laval.
Rue Laval bistros and Outaouais sugar-shack feasts
Eat in Hull, the old centre of Gatineau, where the capital region goes out the Quebec way. Rue Laval packs bistros and bars into a single block, with Le Troquet serving late bistro plates and Piz'za-za making thin-crust pizzas with a matching wine list. In early spring, the Outaouais sugar shacks serve maple-syrup feasts.
Rue Laval, a short street in the old centre, packs bistros and bars into a single block: Le Troquet serves bistro plates and drinks late into the night, while Piz'za-za across the street turns out thin-crust, single-size pizzas with a wine list to match. Les Brasseurs du Temps, a brewpub beside the Ruisseau de la Brasserie (Brewery Creek), pours beers brewed on site.
Ordinary Quebec food is worth trying too. Poutine is everywhere, from late-night snack bars to proper restaurants, and tourtière, a spiced meat pie, turns up on bistro menus in winter.
The great seasonal treat is the cabane à sucre. When the sap runs in March and April, sugar shacks in the hills around Gatineau serve long communal meals of pea soup, ham, baked beans, omelettes and pancakes, all soaked in fresh maple syrup, then pour hot syrup on snow for tire, the chewy maple taffy rolled onto a stick. Book weekends ahead. Remember too that wine and beer are sold in corner dépanneurs on this side of the river, handy for a picnic in the park.
