Milton travel guide
Rattlesnake Point cliffs, Crawford Lake longhouses and a Saturday market
A fast-growing commuter town on the Niagara Escarpment, with cliff lookouts, a reconstructed Iroquoian village and lake swimming at Kelso a few minutes from Highway 401. Visit from May to October, with autumn colour around early October. One full day covers the main parks; stay two if you want to climb or hike the Bruce Trail. Expect very high prices, and an eTA if you arrive by air without a visa.
Milton sits 54 km west of downtown Toronto where Highway 401 meets the Niagara Escarpment, and that limestone ridge is the reason to come. Rattlesnake Point, Crawford Lake and Kelso all lie a short drive from the town centre, with the Bruce Trail threading between them.
At Rattlesnake Point, the Buffalo Crag lookout is the place to watch turkey vultures riding the updrafts, and the cliffs below hold cedars roughly a thousand years old. Fit walkers can follow the Nassagaweya Canyon Trail across to Crawford Lake, where the longhouses of a reconstructed Iroquoian village stand near the water. Kelso adds a lake for swimming and paddleboarding, mountain-bike trails and a small ski hill for winter.
Downtown grew up around Jasper Martin's grist mill and the Mill Pond he created to power it in the 1820s. Main Street keeps the town's oldest buildings and its independent restaurants, while on Saturday mornings from spring to fall the farmers' market fills the street from 7am to noon. Walking trails loop round the pond itself.

Where to stay
Exit 320 hotels, Mill Pond streets or a Kelso campsite
Choose by convenience, because Milton has few characterful beds. Chain hotels at Highway 401 exit 320 suit drivers, 10 to 15 minutes from the escarpment parks, with nothing to walk to at night. Old Milton around the Mill Pond has the restaurants but very few rooms, and campers can pitch beside the lake at Kelso.
- Highway 401 exit 320
- Chain hotels, free parking, car-dependent
- Old Milton and the Mill Pond
- Main Street dining and the market, few beds
- Kelso Conservation Area
- Lakeside camping right below the escarpment
- Burlington and Oakville, a short drive south, offer more choice.
Getting around
Martin Street buses, MiWay transfers and the drive up Guelph Line

Milton Transit routes meet at Milton GO seven days a week since September 2025, with two-hour transfers to MiWay.

Buffalo Crag at dawn, Nassagaweya Canyon by noon
Milton's draw is the Niagara Escarpment. Reach Rattlesnake Point early, before the car park fills, for the short walk to Buffalo Crag, where turkey vultures circle at eye level and cedars around a thousand years old cling to the cliffs. Strong walkers can cross the Nassagaweya Canyon to Crawford Lake; others drive round by Guelph Line.
Start early at Rattlesnake Point, before the car park fills. The short walk to Buffalo Crag gives the widest view over the escarpment and the farmland below, and turkey vultures often circle at eye level as the morning air warms. Climbers rope up on the cliff faces nearby, so keep children back from the edge, and look for the gnarled cedars clinging to the rock, some of them around a thousand years old.
Strong walkers can drop into the Nassagaweya Canyon Trail and cross to Crawford Lake; allow most of a day for the round trip. Everyone else should drive round by Guelph Line. At Crawford Lake, walk the boardwalk around the small, deep lake and step inside the reconstructed Iroquoian longhouses, which give a sense of the villages that stood here centuries before Jasper Martin built his mill.
In the afternoon, continue north on Guelph Line to the Halton County Radial Railway and ride the old streetcars along the 2 km track, then look round the display barns and the old Rockwood Station on the grounds. In summer, finish with a late swim or a paddleboard at Kelso. On a Saturday, flip the order and head into town first, because the Main Street farmers' market packs up at noon.
Ivy Arms patio pints and Orange Snail flights on Steeles
After a day on the escarpment, eat on Milton's Main Street. The Ivy Arms at 201 Main Street East has a big ivy-covered patio and a long comfort-food menu, and La Toscana a few doors along leans on its wine cellar and Italian cooking. Sushi-Ya Japan on Martin Street does a steady takeaway trade.
For something lighter, Sushi-Ya Japan on Martin Street turns out sushi and Japanese plates and does a steady takeaway trade, handy if you are heading back to a campsite. Pizza 360 on Mill Street faces the Mill Pond, so you can eat on a bench by the water, and it stays open late on Fridays.
Beer drinkers should seek out Orange Snail Brewers on Steeles Avenue East, a small craft brewery whose taproom pours flights of four samples. Its hours are short early in the week, so go Thursday to Saturday.
The Saturday farmers' market on Main Street, running from 7 am to noon between spring and fall, is the best showcase for Halton's farms: sweet corn and strawberries in season, baking, honey and preserves. Arrive before nine for the best of the produce and a coffee before the crowds.
