Kitchener travel guide
Oktoberfest, a Saturday market and the old Berlin downtown
Waterloo's twin city, an hour west of Toronto, with a strong farmers' market and an Oktoberfest billed as the largest outside Munich. May to October is best, early October for the festival. A day or two is enough, with St. Jacobs as a side trip. Prices are very high, and an eTA covers visa-exempt air travellers.
Kitchener lies about 100 km west of Toronto, joined so tightly to Waterloo that locals simply say K-W. Until 1916 the city was called Berlin, and wartime feeling forced a vote to rename it after Lord Kitchener. The German roots still show every October, when Oktoberfest fills beer halls in both cities, and in the Mennonite farm country to the north.
Downtown is compact. The Saturday farmers' market on King Street East is the best reason to get up early; since a fire in July 2026 it has traded outdoors while the building is repaired. A few blocks away, Victoria Park has a lake, a statue of Queen Victoria and the clock tower saved from the old city hall. Centre in the Square hosts the symphony and touring Broadway shows.
Getting around by car takes patience. Streets curve, change their compass labels at the Waterloo line and rarely follow a grid. The ION light rail on King Street is easier for the core, and Grand River Transit buses cover the rest.

Getting there
Pearson shuttles, YKF in Breslau and trains to Weber Street
Toronto Pearson (YYZ), 74 km east of Kitchener, is the main airport; allow about an hour by road on Highway 401 when traffic moves; shuttle companies and scheduled minibuses run to the larger hotels. Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF) in Breslau has a few routes, and GO and VIA trains stop on Weber Street. From there, door-to-door shuttle companies and scheduled minibuses run to the larger Kitchener hotels; the drive takes about an hour when the 401 is moving and much longer at rush hour. Region of Waterloo International (YKF), 8 km from downtown, is handy if your route happens to fly there, with domestic flights and seasonal sun charters; a taxi into town is short. By rail, Kitchener station on Weber Street West is a stop for GO trains from Toronto Union and for VIA's Toronto to London and Sarnia service. It lies about 650 m from ION Central Station, an easy walk or a hop on GRT route 20 or 34.
- Toronto Pearson (YYZ)
- 74 km away; shuttle vans and hotel minibuses, about an hour by road off-peak
- Region of Waterloo Airport (YKF)
- 8 km from downtown, domestic and seasonal sun flights
- Kitchener station
- GO trains to Toronto Union and VIA on the Toronto-London-Sarnia line, Weber Street West
- By car
- Highway 401 to exit 278A, Highway 8, then the King Street exit for downtown
- GO trains run most often in weekday rush hours; check the weekend timetable before planning a Sunday return.
- Coming from London, use exit 278, not 278A, and follow Highway 8 east.
Where to stay
The Walper on Queen, uptown Waterloo or the Highway 8 strip
Stay in downtown Kitchener to walk to the Saturday market and step onto the ION light rail outside your door. Uptown Waterloo, a short ION ride north, has livelier bars, and the chain hotels by Highway 8 and the 401 only make sense if you have a car.
- Downtown Kitchener
- The Walper Hotel on Queen Street South, on a site used for a hotel since 1820, and the Crowne Plaza on King Street East; quiet after 10 pm on weeknights
- Uptown Waterloo
- A short ION ride north, livelier bars and the two universities, though rooms run short during university graduation weeks
- Victoria Park area
- Leafy streets and older houses next to the park, mostly short-stay rentals with few hotels
- Highway 8 and the 401
- Chain hotels with parking for St. Jacobs or Cambridge trips; little within walking distance
- Oktoberfest week fills every hotel in the region, so book months ahead or stay in Cambridge.
Getting around
Riding ION from Fairview Park to Conestoga, plus GRT's routes 20 and 34

Grand River Transit (GRT) runs ION and the buses on one fare system, with an EasyGO card or tickets from the machines on the platforms, and transfers between the two are included for a limited time. Downtown itself is best on foot: the market, City Hall and Victoria Park are all within about 10 minutes of each other.
- ION light rail

Know before you go
What makes Kitchener worth the trip, and what catches visitors out.
Why travelers love it
- Saturday at Kitchener Market, early, before the best stalls sell out.
- Victoria Park, designed by the Olmsted firm, with its lake and the old city hall clock tower.
- The Pioneer Memorial Tower, built in 1925 for the settlers of the first inland community in Upper Canada.
Good to know
- Street labels flip at the Waterloo line, so an address on King Street North is in Waterloo, not a typo for King Street East.
- St. Jacobs sits outside the light rail; plan on a car, a bus connection or a tour.

Weather in Kitchener, month by month
South-western Ontario weather: warm summers and reliable winter snow, measured at Region of Waterloo International Airport.

Saturday market, then St. Jacobs and the Pioneer Tower
Kitchener splits neatly into a market Saturday and a country Sunday. Reach Kitchener Market at 300 King Street East at its 7 am opening and eat breakfast from the stalls, walk King Street to City Hall and around the lake in Victoria Park, then drive out on Sunday to St. Jacobs and the Pioneer Tower above the Grand River.
Make Saturday a downtown day. Reach Kitchener Market at 300 King Street East when it opens at 7 am, while farmers are still unloading, and eat breakfast from the stalls. Walk west along King Street to City Hall at 200 King Street West, then cut down Gaukel Street to the main gate of Victoria Park. Circle the lake past the clock tower rescued from the old city hall and the statue of Queen Victoria.
After lunch, board the ION on King Street and ride it to uptown Waterloo for a wander and a coffee, returning by late afternoon. In the evening, see what is on at Centre in the Square, built big enough for Wagner and home to the K-W Symphony, or at the small Registry Theatre on Frederick Street. A Kitchener Rangers game at the Aud on East Avenue is the louder alternative in winter.
Sunday needs a car. Drive out to the Waterloo Pioneer Memorial Tower on Lookout Lane, a 1925 national historic site above the Grand River, then continue north to St. Jacobs, where horse-drawn Mennonite buggies share the roads with tour coaches. Spend the afternoon at its market and village shops, or walk a stretch of the Walter Bean Trail beside the river before heading back.
Kitchener's German table of schnitzel, sausage and market stalls
Kitchener's food follows its German past. Order schnitzel, smoked pork sausage and sauerkraut in the German halls and clubs, and in October at every Oktoberfest festhalle, with long tables, oompah bands and litre mugs. On Saturdays, Kitchener Market on King Street East sells summer sausage, baking and produce from local farms.
The German past shapes the menu more than anything else. Outside festival week, the same dishes turn up on the menus of the German social clubs around the city.
Kitchener Market is the everyday answer. On Saturday mornings the farmers set up their stalls: Mennonite growers with seasonal fruit, eggs and maple syrup, along with bakers selling apple fritters and stalls of summer sausage, the cured, smoked beef sausage you will find across Waterloo Region. The upstairs food hall, usually the cheapest decent lunch downtown, has no public access until the fire repairs are finished.
Frederick Street and King Street hold most of the sit-down places. Three Kretans has served Greek food on Frederick since 1995. For beer, The Bent Elbow, out on King Street East near Fairview Park Mall, keeps about 40 taps of Ontario craft brews. If you are driving to St. Jacobs, time it for market day there, when the stalls sell Mennonite baking, preserves and fresh pies.

Getting there
YKF is only 8 km from downtown but has a short list of routes. Pearson, 74 km away, has far more flights and shuttle vans to Kitchener hotels.
Quite. Streets rarely follow a grid, and King, Weber and Westmount switch from east-west labels to north-south ones at the Waterloo boundary.

Cancellations & changes
Anti-German feeling during the First World War led to a referendum that renamed Berlin after Lord Kitchener, the British field marshal.
Stay & facilities
The Walper Hotel on Queen Street South and the Crowne Plaza on King Street East, near the Queen and Frederick ION stops.
Visa & documents
Visa-exempt travelers, including citizens of the UK, the EU and Australia, need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to fly to or through Canada. US citizens need only a passport. Other nationalities need a visitor visa.
