Longueuil travel guide
Yellow Line suburb with a painted co-cathedral and riverside trails
A south-shore city two metro stops from downtown Montreal, useful as a quieter and cheaper base. Come May to September for cycling and the big park. Half a day covers Vieux-Longueuil; the rest of your time belongs to Montreal. Visa-exempt air travellers need an eTA for Canada.
Longueuil faces Montreal across the St. Lawrence, two metro stops from downtown on a line that runs under the river. Most of it is post-war commuter suburb, so the case for coming is narrow but real: a cheaper, calmer base for Montreal, the old streets of Vieux-Longueuil around rue Saint-Charles, and the trails of Parc Michel-Chartrand.
Charles Le Moyne took the seigneury in 1657 and named it after a village near Dieppe in Normandy. His son later built a stone fort with four towers here. Little of that era survives. The building to see is the Co-Cathedral of Saint-Antoine-de-Padoue, a neo-Gothic church from the 1880s covered in painted decoration, with a small museum in the basement. Maison Daniel-Poirier, a 1750 stone house on rue Saint-Charles Est, opens by appointment.
Aerospace pays the bills here. Pratt & Whitney Canada is the biggest employer, and the Canadian Space Agency has its headquarters beside Saint-Hubert airport. For visitors the green side matters more: Parc Michel-Chartrand has close to 20 km of paths with deer in the woods, plus cross-country skiing in winter.

Best time to visit Longueuil
Month by month, so you can pick the weather and the crowds you want.
Highs climb from 19C in May to 26C in July, warm enough for long evenings on the La Riveraine cycle route and in the woods of Parc Michel-Chartrand.
January averages -6C by day and -15C at night; the park switches to cross-country skiing and a skating rink, and the metro keeps Montreal close without driving on snow.
November is the wettest month at Saint-Hubert (about 104 mm) and the trails turn to mud before the first snow; save park days for September or early October.

Getting there
Trudeau's 747, the Yellow Line under the river and Porter flights into Saint-Hubert
Reach Longueuil through Montreal: from Montreal-Trudeau (YUL), take the 747 express bus to Berri-UQAM downtown and ride the Yellow Line (line 4) under the St. Lawrence River to Longueuil, about an hour in all. Porter also flies into Saint-Hubert airport on the Longueuil side. The 747 express bus runs from the terminal to downtown, ending at Berri-UQAM, where the Yellow Line (line 4) takes you under the St. Lawrence to Longueuil-Université-de-Sherbrooke in two stops. Allow about an hour and a half door to door, more at rush hour, when the 747 crawls along the Autoroute 20. A taxi over the Jacques-Cartier Bridge is the easier choice with heavy bags or a late arrival. Porter Airlines flies into Montréal/Saint-Hubert (YHU) from Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver, Halifax and other Canadian cities; the airport sits inside Longueuil itself and is far closer to most addresses here.
- 747 bus + Yellow Line
- YUL to Berri-UQAM, then two metro stops via Jean-Drapeau to Longueuil
- Saint-Hubert airport (YHU)
- Porter flights from across Canada; an RTL bus links the terminal with Terminus Longueuil
- Commuter train
- Exo's Mont-Saint-Hilaire line stops at Longueuil-Saint-Hubert station
- By car
- Jacques-Cartier Bridge from Montreal, or Autoroutes 20 and 25 and Route 132
- A 747 ticket is also valid on the rest of the STM network for the day, so keep it for the metro leg.
- Avoid crossing the Jacques-Cartier Bridge by car between about 7 and 9 am, when the commuter flow into Montreal backs up.
Where to stay
Hotels by the Jacques-Cartier Bridge or a room off rue Saint-Charles
Stay within walking distance of the Longueuil metro station if you want to use the city as a Montreal base, because downtown Montreal is then one short Yellow Line ride away. Hotels by the Jacques-Cartier Bridge and rooms off rue Saint-Charles suit this; out in Saint-Hubert or Greenfield Park, every trip starts with an RTL bus.
- Around Longueuil metro
- Hotel Dauphin and other chain hotels by the bridge; best for Montreal sightseeing, though the area is mostly roads and car parks
- Vieux-Longueuil
- Rue Saint-Charles bistros and the riverside within a walk; few hotels, so look at guesthouses and short-stay apartments
- Saint-Hubert
- Motels along boulevard Taschereau and near the airport; fine with a car, slow by bus
- Greenfield Park
- Quiet residential borough with an English-speaking history; little to do in the evening
- Check the walking time to Longueuil-Université-de-Sherbrooke station before booking anything labelled Longueuil.
Getting around
Terminus Longueuil, RTL routes and the bike path over Jacques-Cartier
Start every Longueuil trip at Terminus Longueuil, at Place Charles-Le Moyne, which houses the Yellow Line metro station and the main bus terminal of the Réseau de transport de Longueuil (RTL). Pay with an OPUS card, and cycle to Montreal on the bike path across the Jacques-Cartier Bridge. Fares are on the OPUS card; a ticket that covers both Montreal and the south shore lets you switch from metro to RTL bus without paying twice, while an STM-only fare stops at the river. The metro ride to Berri-UQAM takes only a few minutes, but RTL buses to Saint-Hubert or Greenfield Park can take half an hour or more, and evening service thins out.
- Yellow Line
- Longueuil to Jean-Drapeau (Parc Jean-Drapeau) and Berri-UQAM, two stops
- RTL buses
- From Terminus Longueuil to Vieux-Longueuil, Saint-Hubert and Greenfield Park
- Cycling
- La Riveraine, part of the Route verte, follows the river; the Jacques-Cartier Bridge has a path into Montreal
- On foot
- Vieux-Longueuil is about a 20-minute walk from the metro along the river side of rue Saint-Charles
- Buy an all-zone OPUS fare if you plan to ride RTL buses as well as the metro.
Know before you go
What makes Longueuil worth the trip, and what catches visitors out.
Why travelers love it
- The co-cathedral's interior, all polychrome walls under a stained-glass cupola, at rue Saint-Charles and chemin de Chambly.
- Parc Michel-Chartrand, where deer turn up beside the trails and a 5 km loop suits an easy run.
- A beer at Le Barrage, the brewpub inside the Longueuil public market, with 16 taps.
Good to know
- Maison Daniel-Poirier and the Musée de la Femme open only by booking; phone at least two days ahead.
- French comes first in shops and restaurants here; start with bonjour before switching to English.

Weather in Longueuil, month by month
Across the river from Montreal, Longueuil shares its hot summers and snowy winters.
Climate figures are approximate long-term averages for Longueuil (Environment Canada, via Wikipedia).
Parc Michel-Chartrand deer and the lanes of Vieux-Longueuil
Mornings in Longueuil belong to the park and afternoons to the old town. Enter Parc Michel-Chartrand from rue Adoncour early, walk the marsh boardwalk where deer stand at the edge of the trees, or run the 5 km loop, then explore the historic streets of Vieux-Longueuil around rue Saint-Charles Ouest.
The 5 km jogging loop is the obvious warm-up, but the slower option is the boardwalk by the marsh, where deer often stand at the edge of the trees before the dog walkers arrive. In winter the same paths are groomed for cross-country skiing and the slope by the play area fills with sledges.
By late morning, take an RTL bus or drive to Vieux-Longueuil. Begin at the Co-Cathedral of Saint-Antoine-de-Padoue, on the corner of rue Saint-Charles and chemin de Chambly, and go inside: the 1880s walls are painted from floor to cupola, and the basement holds a small museum. If you phoned ahead, Maison Daniel-Poirier on rue Saint-Charles Est is the one house in the old village that still looks as it did under French rule. Stop for lunch on the same street.
Spend the afternoon by the water. The riverside path gives a long view of the Montreal skyline and the Jacques-Cartier Bridge. Late in the day, ride the Yellow Line one stop to Jean-Drapeau for a walk on Île Sainte-Hélène, or stay south of the river for a show at the Théâtre de la Ville on rue De Gentilly Est.
Steamies on chemin de Chambly and pints at the Savane market
Longueuil's food is Québécois first. For a quick meal, Alfa on chemin de Chambly serves poutine and steamies, the steamed hot dogs Montrealers argue about, until late; order them all-dressed with mustard, onion and coleslaw. Rue Saint-Charles Ouest is the sit-down street, with bistros such as Copains Gourmands.
Copains Gourmands builds its menu on Quebec produce with borrowed flavours from elsewhere, and Pêche Matinal does French-style breakfasts and lunches, so it is the place to begin a Saturday. Restaurant Méridional, further along chemin de Chambly, leans Mediterranean, with French and Spanish dishes on the card. Most of these close in the afternoon or open only certain days, so check before you walk over.
For something less formal, head to the Longueuil public market on chemin de la Savane. Stalls sell local cheese, maple products and seasonal produce, and Le Barrage, the brewpub inside, pours 16 house beers with sandwiches to match. It stays open late on Friday and Saturday. In late winter, look out for sugar-shack menus around the south shore: pea soup, ham and eggs cooked in maple syrup, and tire sur la neige, hot syrup set on snow.
