Sherbrooke travel guide
River gorge, Lac des Nations and a student town in the Townships
The Eastern Townships' main city, about two hours by coach from Montreal, with a large student crowd, riverside parks and ski slopes inside the city. June to September is best for lakes and the fireworks festival. Stay one or two days, more with Magog and Mont-Orford. Costs run very high, and visa-exempt air travellers apply for an eTA.
Sherbrooke grew where the Magog River tumbles into the Saint-François, and the main city of the Eastern Townships still feels like a river town. Its nickname, Queen of the Eastern Townships, goes back to the early 1900s. Roughly one resident in ten is a university student, the highest share in Quebec, which keeps the bars and cafes full.
Downtown, the Musée des beaux-arts fills a 19th-century bank building on rue Dufferin and focuses on Townships artists. The Musée de la nature et des sciences is a short walk away on rue Frontenac. Lac des Nations is the summer centre of town, and for six days in mid-July the Fête du Lac des Nations fills Parc Jacques-Cartier with concerts and pyromusical fireworks shows.
Nature starts inside the city limits. Bois Beckett is an old-growth forest with about 6 km of trails, and Parc Lucien-Blanchard has a swimming beach on the Magog in summer. In winter, Mont-Bellevue runs downhill slopes in the middle of the city, with bigger ski hills and lakes all around.

Where to stay
Rue Wellington, the lakeshore or Lennoxville
Pick downtown around rue Wellington to walk to the gorge, museums and bars, though Thursday to Saturday nights are loud. The Lac des Nations edge is quieter, with few hotels. Lennoxville, the Bishop's University borough, feels like a separate small town, and west-end chains on rue King Ouest need a car.
- Downtown (rue Wellington and rue King Est)
- Walk to the gorge, museums and bars; Thursday to Saturday nights are loud
- Lac des Nations edge
- Quieter rooms near the promenade, Siboire and the Marché de la Gare; few hotels, so book early
- Lennoxville
- Bishop's University borough where you hear more English, with a village pace; about 15 minutes' drive from downtown
- Rue King Ouest and Boulevard Bourque
- Chain hotels and motels in the west end with easy parking, but a car is essential

Forty-eight hours between the Magog gorge and Lac des Nations
Start Sherbrooke at the Magog gorge, where a walkway hangs over the rapids below downtown, then climb to rue Dufferin for the Musée des beaux-arts and its Frederick Simpson Coburn paintings, open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm. Spend the afternoon on the Lac des Nations promenade and in Parc Jacques-Cartier.
Morning one belongs to the river. Start at the Magog gorge, where a walkway hangs over the rapids just below downtown, then climb to rue Dufferin for the Musée des beaux-arts. Head for the third floor: the permanent collection gives pride of place to Frederick Simpson Coburn, the painter born in nearby Melbourne, Quebec, of horses and sleighs in Townships snow. The museum opens Wednesday to Sunday only, from 10am to 4pm, so keep this morning for one of those days.
In the afternoon, walk downhill to Lac des Nations and go round the water on the promenade. Lunch on the Siboire terrace, then cross into Parc Jacques-Cartier. On a fireworks night during the summer festival, claim a patch of grass early. Spend the evening on rue Wellington Nord, with Boquébière as the anchor.
Day two goes green. Bois Beckett, one of only two old urban forests in Quebec, has eight trails adding up to about 6 km, and the Réal-D.-Carbonneau marsh is a gentler loop with birds in spring and autumn. On a hot afternoon trade the woods for the beach at Parc Lucien-Blanchard. Families with younger children will get more from the Musée de la nature et des sciences on rue Frontenac. In January, ski Mont-Bellevue instead.
Poutine bien cuite, abbey cheese and Townships microbrews
Poutine is taken seriously in student Sherbrooke. Pizzeria Stratos on 12e Avenue Nord serves the cult order: well-done fries with barbecue sauce on the side so the curds stay squeaky, plus molasses-glazed ribs. Restaurant Louis does classic poutine from early morning, and Siboire brews beside Lac des Nations with full menus.
Beer is the second local strength. Siboire brews on site beside Lac des Nations and serves proper lunch and dinner menus, which makes it the easiest sit-down meal near the water. Boquébière on rue Wellington Nord opens in the evening and pours until late most nights.
The surrounding countryside fills the rest of the table. Townships cheeses, cider and maple products turn up at the Marché de la Gare by the lake. Under an hour away on Lac Memphrémagog, the Benedictine monks of Saint-Benoît-du-Lac sell their own cheeses and cider in the abbey shop. March and April are sugar shack season: book a cabane à sucre lunch of ham, baked beans and pea soup, finished with tire d'érable, maple taffy rolled on snow.

Visa-exempt travelers, including citizens of the UK, the EU and Australia, need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to fly to or through Canada. US citizens need only a passport. Other nationalities need a visitor visa.
Health & safety
Canada's main risks are natural: wildlife, summer wildfires and extreme winter cold. Store food properly in bear country, check wildfire and road conditions before summer drives, and carry winter gear when driving in snow. Call 911 for police, fire or ambulance anywhere in the country.
