Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu
Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu travel guide
Hot-air balloons, a canal towpath and a fort on the Richelieu
A river city in Quebec's Montérégie, 40 km from Montreal, known for its August balloon festival, the Chambly Canal and its military college. Go June to September. Allow a day, or two nights during the festival. Most visa-exempt visitors flying into Canada need an eTA.
Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu is a city of about 98,000 people (2021 census) in the Montérégie region of Quebec, roughly 40 km south-east of Montreal. It is the seat of Le Haut-Richelieu regional county municipality, and the present city was formed when Saint-Jean and its neighbouring communities merged on 24 January 2001.
The city straddles both banks of the Richelieu River, close to the northernmost navigable point reached from Lake Champlain. That position made it a military post from the start: the French built Fort Saint-Jean here in the 17th century to guard the river route between Montreal and the south.
The fort grounds are still in use. The Royal Military College Saint-Jean was founded there in 1952, stopped granting degrees in 1995 and reopened in 2007, and today it offers college-level and first-year university programmes for officer cadets.
For visitors, the draws are the river and the sky. The Chambly Canal runs north from the city along the west bank, with a towpath for cycling and walking, and each August the International Balloon Festival brings hot-air balloons and thousands of visitors to the city.
