In short

Scoot is the low-cost airline of Singapore Airlines, based at Changi Airport. It flies to Thailand, India, China, Japan, Australia and Europe, so it suits budget trips across Asia and some long-haul routes. Scoot sits in the Singapore Airlines Group with no alliance. Economy allows 10 kg of cabin baggage in two pieces and ScootPlus 15 kg; checked bags come as a bundle or add-on.

Scoot is the budget carrier of the Singapore Airlines group, built around one hub at Changi.

What to expect

Scoot is the low-cost airline owned by Singapore Airlines. It was set up in November 2011, flew its first service in June 2012 and in 2017 absorbed Tigerair, its stablemate, while keeping the Scoot name. Everything runs through Singapore Changi Airport.

Thailand is one of its densest markets. From Changi, Scoot flies to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Hat Yai, Krabi, Koh Samui and Phuket. That gives a traveller already in Singapore a direct choice of the capital, two northern cities, the deep south and three beach airports, without routing through Bangkok first. In the capital, Scoot uses Suvarnabhumi; its old Don Mueang service is listed as ended. Chiang Rai lies close to the borders with Laos and Myanmar, and Hat Yai is the main airport for Songkhla province near the Malaysian frontier.

Scoot's former Dhaka route is listed as terminated, and the network now centres on Changi connections. Further afield, Scoot serves Chennai, Amritsar, Tiruchirappalli and other Indian cities, plus China, Japan, Australia and two European points, Athens and Vienna.

How did Scoot become Singapore Airlines' budget arm?

Scoot was founded on 1 November 2011 and flew its first service, Singapore to Sydney, on 4 June 2012, using Boeing 777-200ERs handed down from Singapore Airlines. Those jets were retired by 2016 as the first Boeing 787-9 arrived in February 2015. The merger with Tigerair was announced in November 2016 and completed in July 2017, when Scoot kept its name but took over Tigerair's operating certificate and the TR code; Scoot's original code had been TZ. A Thai joint venture with Nok Air, NokScoot, flew from 2015 until it went into liquidation in June 2020.

Leslie Thng has led the airline since 17 June 2022, when he succeeded Campbell Wilson. Scoot's head office is at Changi, and since October 2019 its flights have used Terminal 1. Taipei Taoyuan is a focus city, with flights from Taiwan onward to Japan and Korea.

The Boeing 787-8s and 787-9s, the largest aircraft in the fleet, are the types Scoot uses on its longest flights from Changi, including Athens and Vienna. On those routes it is worth checking the aircraft type when you book, as the 787 cabin has a ScootPlus section and the narrow-body Airbus and Embraer jets have different seat layouts.

  5. 05

    Weigh both cabin pieces together

Scoot's cabin allowance is 10 kg across two pieces, more generous than the 7 kg common among Asian budget airlines. Even so, both pieces are weighed together, so a laptop bag counts toward the limit. Checked baggage is a separate purchase on the basic fare.
