Bangkok to Phitsanulok flight guide
Both airlines fly nonstop from Don Mueang (DMK) to Phitsanulok (PHS), a hop of about 320 km that takes roughly 50 minutes. Nok Air flew the route for years; listings disagree on whether it still does, so check Nok Air's own timetable before relying on it.
Phitsanulok is a busy provincial city in its own right, home to Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat and its revered Phra Phuttha Chinnarat image, on the bank of the Nan River. It is also the cheaper way to reach Sukhothai: flights here usually cost less than flying to Sukhothai's own airport, and the old capital's historical park is about 58 km to the north-west.
Both airlines use Terminal 2 at Don Mueang. There are no Phitsanulok flights from Suvarnabhumi, so international arrivals need to cross Bangkok first; the free inter-airport shuttle runs for passengers with an onward ticket. The lowest fares on Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air include cabin baggage only, and adding a checked bag online is cheaper than at the counter.
Phitsanulok Airport sits about 5 km south of the old centre. The runway belongs to the Royal Thai Air Force and military aircraft make up most movements, so do not photograph them. The terminal is compact, with a café, car rental desks in arrivals and a taxi counter that gives a fixed fare for the whole car. Grab works here too, though drivers may ask you to walk to a pickup point. The ride to the city centre is 10 to 15 minutes.
Buses to Sukhothai take about an hour but leave from the city bus terminal, not the airport, so you need a taxi or Grab there first. With luggage, a car with driver booked ahead takes you straight from arrivals to the historical park.
November to February is the most comfortable time for walking the ruins at Sukhothai, which have little shade. Loy Krathong in November is the year's busiest moment there, with lantern and light shows at the historical park, and hotels fill early.
Phitsanulok Airport is south of the city's downtown. In 2019 it handled 689,392 passengers on 5,661 flights.
