Tinap Saitar is a remote waterfall in the hills of Rowangchhari, Bandarban, often called the largest in Bangladesh by water flow and reached on a full-day trek through hill villages. It suits fit trekkers travelling with a local guide who can handle steep, muddy paths.
Tinap Saitar lies deep in the hills of Bandarban District in south east Bangladesh, in the Rowangchhari area. It is widely regarded as the largest waterfall in the country by volume of water, and it is also known as Paindu Saitar, after the Paindu stream that feeds it.
The word saitar comes from the language of the Bawm people who live in the surrounding hills and means a spring or waterfall. Bawm and other hill communities live in villages along the routes that lead to the fall.
The water drops about 150 feet over a rock face into a deep pool. In the monsoon the flow becomes very heavy and spray fills the gorge, and on sunny days rainbows often form in the mist. In the dry months the volume falls but the fall still runs.
Tinap Saitar can only be reached on foot. The usual route starts from Rowangchhari and climbs over ridges and through streams and hill villages, and most visitors stay a night in a village before or after the trek. The path is steep and slippery after rain.
Visitors need a registered local guide, and travel in the Bandarban hill areas requires registration with the local authorities. Foreign visitors should check permit rules in advance. October to February offers the safest trekking conditions.
