Sunrise
Stay overnight for sunrise over the clouds.
Nilgiri is a hilltop viewpoint and army-run resort on the Bandarban to Thanchi road, about 47 km from Bandarban town, known for views over the hills and seas of cloud in the monsoon. A small fee is paid at the gate, and cottages are booked in advance. Go for half a day or stay overnight.
Nilgiri lies on the Chimbuk range in Bandarban Hill District, in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of southeast Bangladesh. It sits beside the winding road from Bandarban town to Thanchi, about 47 kilometres southeast of the town, and is often described as the highest point in the country that can be reached by vehicle.
The name means blue mountain.
The site was developed by the Bangladesh Army as a viewpoint and resort, with cottages, a restaurant and viewing terraces along the ridge. Published heights vary widely, from about 2,200 to 3,500 feet above sea level, so treat any single figure with caution.
From the terraces visitors look out over row after row of forested ridges toward the Sangu River valley. In the monsoon and early autumn, clouds often settle in the valleys below the ridge, so that the hills seem to rise out of a white sea, and on clear winter days the view reaches far across the hill tracts. Sunrise and sunset are the most popular times.
The surrounding hills are home to Mro, Marma and other indigenous communities, and small villages and jhum fields can be seen from the road. The drive passes Chimbuk Hill and other viewpoints, and many visitors combine Nilgiri with Shoilopropat waterfall and the Thanchi area.
