What to expect

VietJet Air is Vietnam's largest privately owned airline. It was licensed in 2007, flew its first service from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi on 25 December 2011, and has been listed on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange (VJC) since 28 February 2017, when the listing raised $167 million. Its owners include Sovico Holdings and HDBank, and Nguyễn Thị Phương Thảo has been president and CEO since December 2011. A planned 30% stake for AirAsia, announced in February 2010, was abandoned in October 2011. Its two biggest bases are Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City and Noi Bai in Hanoi, with further bases at Da Nang, Hai Phong and Cam Ranh.

VietJet routes to Thailand

Thailand was VietJet's first international market: Ho Chi Minh City to Bangkok opened in February 2013. Today the airline links Ho Chi Minh City to Bangkok and Hanoi to Bangkok at Suvarnabhumi, and flies Ho Chi Minh City to Phuket. Ho Chi Minh City to Chiang Mai, last flown in February 2024, is scheduled to restart on 25 October 2026 with four flights a week. Return journeys are covered on our Bangkok to Hanoi, Bangkok to Ho Chi Minh City and Phuket to Ho Chi Minh City pages.

How is VietJet Air different from Thai VietJet?

They are two airlines. Thai VietJet Air is a subsidiary with its own VZ flight code, its own Thai air operator's certificate and a network built around Thailand, including domestic Thai flights. VietJet Air uses the VJ code and runs the Vietnamese side of the business. A Bangkok to Vietnam search can show both, so read the flight number before you compare baggage rules.

Beyond Thailand, the network reaches six Indian cities, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Australia and, since 2026, Colombo, announced on 8 May 2026 with four weekly flights from Ho Chi Minh City and a planned extension to Malé. Four new China routes started in spring 2025, including Hanoi to Beijing Daxing from 1 April 2025. VietJet does not fly to Dhaka; Biman, US-Bangla and Thai Airways fly Dhaka to Bangkok, where the VJ flights to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City depart.

Orders and new ventures

VietJet's first wide-body order, 20 Airbus A330-900s worth $7.4 billion, was finalised on 23 July 2024, and in June 2025 it signed a memorandum for 100 A321neos with 50 options. The fleet table counts 104 aircraft in service and 368 on order. A Kazakh affiliate, VietJet Qazaqstan, was announced with Qazaq Air on 8 May 2025.

Online Check-in

The four steps below take you from your VietJet Air booking to the gate, whether you depart from SGN or another airport on its network.

  • Online check-in available
  1. Step 1

    Check in online

Online check-in for VJ flights is on the official VietJet Air website or app. You need the VJ booking reference or e-ticket number and the passenger’s surname.

    Booking ref + surname
  2. Step 2

    Prepare your documents

International VietJet Air passengers need a passport and whatever visa, residence permit or entry documents the destination requires.

    Passport · visa · ID
  3. Step 3

    Arrive early

VietJet Air closes its check-in counters before departure, and passengers who miss the cut-off can be refused boarding. Leave room for bag drop and security at SGN.

    Well before departure
  4. Step 4

    Drop your bags

Hand in checked luggage at the VietJet Air counter or bag drop, then keep your boarding pass and passport ready for security and the gate.

Cheap tickets

Ways to keep a VietJet trip between Thailand and Vietnam cheap and simple.

  1. 01

    Check the flight code

VietJet Air and Thai VietJet both sell Bangkok to Vietnam seats. The prefix on the flight number tells you whose fare rules and contact details apply.

    VJ or VZ
  2. 02

Price Deluxe against Eco plus a bag

On Thailand routes Deluxe bundles 20 kg of checked baggage. If you need a bag anyway, the gap is often small.

    20 kg included
  3. 03

    Connect at Suvarnabhumi

The VJ flights to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City leave from Suvarnabhumi, where most international flights into Bangkok arrive. On separate tickets, leave at least three hours.

    Suvarnabhumi
  4. 04

    Try an open-jaw route

Fly Bangkok to Hanoi and come back from Ho Chi Minh City to Bangkok or Phuket, so you cross Vietnam once with no backtracking.

    Hanoi in, Saigon out
