Flying from Ho Chi Minh City to Phuket

Both airlines, VietJet Air and Vietnam Airlines, fly nonstop from Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) to Phuket International Airport (HKT). The 962 km hop takes about 1 hour 40 minutes and lands you on Thailand's largest island, close to the Andaman Sea beaches of Patong, Kata and Kamala. It suits residents of southern Vietnam on a short holiday and travellers moving on from Vietnam to Thailand.
Vietnam Airlines with a bag, or VietJet seat only
Full-service and low-cost flying both operate here. Vietnam Airlines includes a checked bag and a meal in most economy fares. VietJet Air sells a seat with cabin baggage and charges for checked bags, meals and seat selection. For a beach trip with a suitcase, add the bag to the VietJet fare before you compare.
Vietnam Airlines launched its Ho Chi Minh City to Phuket service on 2 July 2026. It flies four times a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, with Airbus A321 aircraft, and the route raised the airline's weekly Vietnam to Thailand flights to 67.
Rush-hour traffic to Tan Son Nhat Terminal 2
Tan Son Nhat sits inside the city about 7 km from District 1, and international flights use Terminal 2. The short distance does not mean a fast ride in rush hour. Taxis, Grab and the airport bus take 20 to 40 minutes, so leave early in the late afternoon. Aim to reach the airport about three hours before departure, as queues at check-in and exit immigration can be long at busy times.
Taxi or van to Patong and Kata from the north tip
Phuket's airport is at the northern end of the island. International passengers arrive at the international terminal, beside the domestic building. Allow around an hour by taxi or van to Patong or Kata, longer in traffic.
Airports of Thailand lists several public options. The Airport Bus Express runs to Patong Beach between 08:00 and 20:00. The Phuket Smart Bus leaves from near the domestic terminal's arrival exit and serves the beaches from Surin to Rawai. An airport bus goes to Phuket Town about every hour from 08:15 to 20:15, and public vans serve Patong, Kata and Karon. Car hire desks are on the first floor.
Thailand's 30-day exemption since 15 September 2026
Thailand changed its visa exemption rules on 15 September 2026. Citizens of 60 countries and territories now get up to 30 days without a visa, replacing the previous 60-day exemption, and some countries have separate bilateral agreements with their own periods. Every non-Thai visitor must also complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online. It is free, opens three days before your travel date, and is filed on tdac.immigration.go.th. It is not a visa.

To continue to South Asia, fly from Phuket to Bangkok and connect from Suvarnabhumi (see Bangkok to Dhaka flights). If your domestic flight lands at Don Mueang, allow time to cross the city.
