Phuket to Ho Chi Minh City flight guide
VietJet Air and Vietnam Airlines fly nonstop from Phuket International Airport (HKT) in southern Thailand to Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam's largest city. The 962 km flight takes about 1 hour 40 minutes, so it works well for travellers combining a Thai beach stay with southern Vietnam, the Mekong Delta or a business trip to Saigon.
The airlines sell quite different products. VietJet Air is a low-cost carrier: the base fare covers a cabin bag only, and checked luggage, meals and seat choice cost extra. Vietnam Airlines is the national full-service airline, so economy normally includes a checked bag and a meal. On a short flight the gap in price can disappear once you add a suitcase to the VietJet fare, so compare the total before booking.
Vietnam Airlines is the newer arrival. It started its own nonstop between Ho Chi Minh City and Phuket on 2 July 2026, with four return flights a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, using the Airbus A321. The route took the airline's weekly flights between Vietnam and Thailand to 67.
Phuket International Airport is at the northern tip of the island, around an hour by road from Patong, Kata or Karon. Coming from the beaches, the Phuket Smart Bus links Rawai and the west coast as far as Surin with the airport, and the Airport Bus Express runs from Patong to the airport between 06:00 and 18:30. Shared vans also serve Patong, Kata and Karon. For evening flights, book a taxi or hotel transfer.
Airports of Thailand advises arriving at least two hours before departure. The international terminal stands next to the domestic one, and outbound passport control can be slow when several long-haul flights leave together, so allow extra time.
Tan Son Nhat International Airport is inside the city, about 7 km from District 1, which makes it one of the most central airports in the region. International flights arrive at Terminal 2. Taxis, Grab cars and the airport bus reach the centre in 20 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic. Rush hours in Ho Chi Minh City are heavy, so a late-afternoon arrival can take longer than the distance suggests.
Vietnam opened its electronic visa to citizens of all countries in August 2023, and some nationalities can enter without a visa for set periods. Rules depend on your passport, so check the official Vietnamese e-visa portal before you travel and apply only through the government site.
There is no time difference: Thailand and Vietnam both run on UTC+7 all year. The short flight makes day-time departures easy. A morning flight from Phuket can put you in District 1 by lunchtime.
Phuket has no flights to Dhaka, so travellers starting in South Asia normally fly to Bangkok first (see Dhaka to Bangkok flights) and take a domestic flight to the island. Ho Chi Minh City then works as the first stop of a two-country trip.
