Abu Dhabi Grand Prix guide
The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is usually held on the first weekend of December as the last round of the Formula 1 season. The race starts in daylight and ends under lights, on a track running past the marina and beneath a colour-changing hotel. It suits motorsport fans; nearby theme parks help fill the days.
The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is the last race of the Formula 1 season, held on an island at the edge of the capital of the Emirates. It begins in sunlight and ends under floodlights, and because it comes last, the drivers' title has been settled here more than once.
The setting is unlike any other on the calendar. The track loops past the marina and runs beneath a hotel whose curving lit canopy shifts colour after dark, and theme parks, a waterpark and a concert arena share the island with it.
Race week has grown into a festival in its own right, with concerts after the racing each night and the whole island given over to the crowd.

Hotels near the venue fill up around the event dates.
The circuit asks visitors to wear loose, comfortable clothes that cover shoulders, arms and legs. Bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen for the daylight hours and a light layer for later.
Engines and concerts are loud. Ear defenders are close to essential for children, and foam plugs make a long day in the grandstand easier for adults too, especially if you plan to stay on for the music.
Tickets exist only as digital passes in the Abu Dhabi GP app, so a dead phone can mean a long wait at the gate. Carry a power bank and download the pass before you leave the hotel.
Buy only from the official race website or the circuit's own channels, since a pass bought elsewhere cannot be checked until you reach the turnstile.
Andrea Bocelli's National Day concert at Etihad Arena is not part of the race package and needs its own ticket.
The busiest moment of the day is not the start but the hour after the concert, when the whole crowd leaves at once. Agree a meeting point with your group before the music starts.
UAE National Day. Andrea Bocelli sings at Etihad Arena in a separately ticketed series.
Zara Larsson and Lewis Capaldi play the after-race stage that night.
Cars on track from Friday; F1 publishes the session timetable closer to the weekend.
Imagine Dragons close Saturday night at Etihad Park. Race tickets include the after-race concerts.
58 laps from daylight into floodlights, with the W hotel's canopy changing colour as the sky darkens.
Yas Marina Circuit seats 60,000 people across five grandstand areas: Main, North, South, West and Marina. Seats that look over the yachts and those facing the stretch where the track runs beneath the W Abu Dhabi hotel are the first to go, so if either matters to you, buy as soon as sales open. Tickets come only from the official channels and live as digital passes in the Abu Dhabi GP app.
Rooms on Yas Island are the hardest part. The island hotels, among them the Crowne Plaza and the Park Inn that looks across the golf course to the track, are booked months in advance. Saadiyat Island and central Abu Dhabi are cheaper and still workable, but transfers from either crawl on race days. The drive from Dubai takes roughly an hour and a half, which suits fans who want a different city in the evenings and accept two long drives a day.
Read your government's travel advice before paying for anything. The Bahrain and Saudi Arabian rounds were cancelled in April 2026 over regional security concerns, while Abu Dhabi stayed on the calendar. Check again in the week you fly, through official race channels.
The circuit opened in October 2009, designed by Hermann Tilke on a headland that a canal separates from the mainland. Its first Grand Prix, on 1 November that year, was the sport's first day-night race, started at 17:00 local time under a permanent lighting rig billed at the time as the biggest of its kind at a permanent sports ground. Every season since has ended here, and a 2021 agreement guarantees Abu Dhabi the closing round through 2030 at the earliest.
That same year the track was reshaped to encourage overtaking. Today a lap covers 5.281 km with 16 corners and a longest straight of 1.14 km, and the pit-lane exit dips beneath the track itself, while one run-off area sits under the West grandstand.
The final-race slot makes for history. Sebastian Vettel sealed his first title here in 2010. Lewis Hamilton clinched his second in 2014, the year of double points. In 2021 Max Verstappen took his first crown on the last lap after a disputed safety-car call, and in 2025 Lando Norris became champion by two points.
Zayed International Airport is about ten minutes from Yas Island by taxi, with direct flights from Dhaka, Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi and Chiang Mai. Check entry rules on our UAE visa page.
Airport taxis charge 60 to 100 dirham anywhere in the city; metered fares are 1.82 dirham a kilometre.
Route 190 runs to Yas Island from the Abu Dhabi Bus Station next to Al Wahda Mall.
The free Yas Express shuttle links hotels and attractions from 9am to 9pm on ordinary days. About 339,000 people came for the 2025 race weekend, so allow time after the evening concerts.
The hotel below, in Abu Dhabi itself, is the nearest one we list to Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The next edition runs from 3 December to 6 December 2026. Book as soon as your dates are fixed, since rooms close to the festival are the first to go.
Abu Dhabi
Early December is one of the most comfortable times of year in Abu Dhabi. Average highs are about 26 to 27°C and lows about 16°C, with very little rain (1991-2020 normals).
Evenings at the circuit are mild, but a light layer is welcome after sunset.

Timing & weather
The race weekend fills the first week of December, from a fan-zone day on Thursday to the race itself on Sunday the 6th. Practice and qualifying take the two days between.
For now, yes. The deal signed in 2021 keeps the season-closing slot here until at least 2030, so the title fight should keep ending on this island for a few more seasons.
What's included
Yes. Race tickets give entry to the after-race concerts at Etihad Park, which is why many fans stay late. Other concerts in the wider programme, such as the classical evening at Etihad Arena, are ticketed separately.
General
It depends on what you want to see. Seats by the marina and those facing the hotel section sell first. There are five grandstand areas in all, so decide early, because the popular areas go quickly.
It is a day-night race. The start is in late afternoon light and the finish under floodlights, a format the event pioneered at its debut in 2009.
Ferrari World has 21 rides, Yas Waterworld has 43 rides and slides, and Warner Bros. World and SeaWorld are close by. Yas Mall is useful for a cooler afternoon off the circuit.
Getting there
Take the intercity coach from Al Ghubaiba to the main bus station in the capital, then the 190 bus to the island. Allow well over two hours each way on race days.
Booking
The Grand Prix runs over 58 laps of the 5.281 km circuit, a little over 306 km in total, which is the standard length for a modern Formula 1 race.
Health & safety
The race kept its place on the calendar after two other Gulf rounds were cancelled in April over regional security. Follow your own government's travel advice and the official race channels shortly before departure.
Families & accessibility
The island's theme parks make it easy to fill the hours without racing. Bring proper ear protection for younger children, plan shade breaks in the afternoon and decide in advance whether to stay for the late concerts.
Stay & facilities
Saadiyat Island and central Abu Dhabi are the usual fallbacks and cost less. The trade-off is a slower journey on race days, so leave early in the morning and expect queues on the way back.
