Chiang Mai to Abu Dhabi flight guide
Chiang Mai to Abu Dhabi is a nonstop Etihad Airways flight of about 6 hours 15 minutes and 4,605 km from Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) to Zayed International Airport (AUH). It is the only nonstop link between northern Thailand and the Gulf, useful for UAE residents heading home and for travellers connecting to Europe through Abu Dhabi.
Etihad is a full-service airline, so economy fares normally include a checked bag, meals and drinks on board. On a flight of over six hours that matters, and it simplifies comparisons with one-stop itineraries via Bangkok on low-cost carriers, where those extras are charged.
CNX is just south-west of the old city, 15 to 20 minutes by taxi or Grab from most hotels. The city's Yellow and Red bus lines serve the airport from 6 am to 11:30 pm, and red songthaews run there too. Airports of Thailand asks passengers to allow at least two hours before departure; for a long-haul flight with bags to drop, arriving a little earlier is sensible.
If you are returning a rental car, the counters are on the first floor of the terminal. Thai emigration comes before the departure gates, so keep your passport and boarding pass together.
Zayed International Airport, formerly Abu Dhabi International, handles all flights in its Terminal A. The city centre is about 30 km away, reached by taxi or by public bus.
For Etihad passengers continuing to Europe, North America or Africa, AUH is the hub, and connections on one ticket stay airside with bags checked through.
Whether you need a visa for the UAE depends on your nationality: some passports receive a visit visa on arrival, others must apply in advance. The UAE government portal (u.ae) lists the visa types and how to apply, and our UAE visa page summarises them. Check before you book, as Etihad will refuse boarding without the right document.
Six hours is long enough to plan for. Choose an aisle if you will want to walk about, keep a layer handy for the cabin, and order any special meal through Etihad's booking pages well before departure. If you booked a separate ticket into Chiang Mai, leave a generous gap, as a delay on the first flight will not be protected.
Thai departure procedures are simple: check in, pass security and emigration, then go to the gate. Use the same passport you entered Thailand on.
The UAE is three hours behind Thailand (UTC+4 against UTC+7), and neither country uses daylight saving. An evening departure from Chiang Mai lands in Abu Dhabi the same night, local time.
Chiang Mai's high season runs from November to February and it is also the cooler half of the year in Abu Dhabi. Chiang Mai's air is often hazy from crop burning between late February and April.
Etihad's network from Abu Dhabi reaches the Gulf, South Asia and Europe. Our Dhaka to Abu Dhabi flights page covers one of the South Asian routes from AUH. Travellers coming the other way into Thailand often start in Bangkok; see Dhaka to Bangkok flights for that leg.
Coming back to the UAE, remember that your entry document must be valid on arrival. Residents should check their residence visa dates before leaving Thailand.
With only one airline on the route, there is no fare competition on the nonstop. If Etihad's price is high for your dates, compare a one-stop routing via Bangkok, but count the extra baggage charges and the change of airport if the Bangkok leg uses Don Mueang.
