Bangkok to Mae Sot flight guide
Nok Air is the only airline flying from Bangkok to Mae Sot. Its nonstop service leaves Don Mueang (DMK) and lands at Mae Sot (MAQ) after about 55 minutes, covering roughly 381 km. Mae Sot's 1,500 m runway is too short for jets, which is why the route is flown by turboprop and why no low-cost jet airline competes on it.
Mae Sot is a working border town in Tak province, facing Myawaddy in Myanmar across the Moei River. Travellers come for the Burmese market, the Rim Moei border market, the reclining Buddha at Wat Thai Wattanaram and the waterfalls along Highway 1090, and many passengers are aid workers, traders and families with links across the border.
Flights leave from Terminal 2 at Don Mueang, Nok Air's home airport. Nothing flies to Mae Sot from Suvarnabhumi. Turboprop cabins have smaller overhead bins than a 737, so a full-size roller case may end up in the hold even if it is within the weight limit. Check what your Nok Air fare includes in baggage before you pack.
Mae Sot Airport opened its current terminal in 2019. It is built for far more passengers than it handles, so arrivals are quick and quiet. The town centre and the Burmese market are about 3 km away, five to ten minutes by taxi or tuk-tuk; there is no meter, so agree the fare first. Car rental counters operate at the terminal, and a car with driver is the easiest way out to the waterfalls.
The airport is only about 3 km from the Moei River and the Friendship Bridge. Whether foreigners can cross into Myanmar here changes with the situation on the other side, so check current entry rules with the Myanmar embassy before you plan around the bridge. Conditions change, so check official advice before building plans around it.
The cool season from November to February is the pleasant time for the waterfalls and the markets. From about May to October the south-west monsoon brings heavy rain to this side of the hills, and the waterfalls are at their fullest, though the roads to them are muddier.
Mae Sot Airport (IATA MAQ, ICAO VTPM) is in Tha Sai Luat subdistrict. Its passenger terminal opened on 4 April 2019 and was designed for 1.7 million passengers a year, ten times the old building's 170,000.
We check practical details such as entry rules, seasons and costs against official government and tourism sources.

Nok Air's fare types differ in what baggage they include. Check your fare before you fly; large cabin cases may need to go in the hold on the turboprop.
Worth knowing before a Mae Sot trip.

The crossing to Myawaddy opens and closes with conditions in Myanmar. Read official advice before planning around it, and carry a valid Myanmar visa or e-visa if you intend to cross.
The Tararak and Phra Charoen waterfalls lie south of town on Highway 1090. A car with driver from the airport is the practical way to see them.
