Terminal 2 departures and Thai AirAsia's cabin-only fares
Both airlines fly from Terminal 2 at Don Mueang; Nan has no flights from Suvarnabhumi. The SRT Red Line reaches Don Mueang station from Krung Thep Aphiwat in about 20 minutes, which beats the expressway at rush hour. Thai AirAsia sells its lowest fares with cabin baggage only, and Nok Air's fare types differ in what they include, so compare prices with a bag added.
Walking to the small terminal on Route 1080
Nan Nakhon Airport sits about 3 km north of the centre on Route 1080. Passengers walk between the aircraft and the small terminal, which opened in 2014 and was named by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn the following year. There is an ATM and car rental, but no airport bus. Taxis and motorbike taxis wait outside, and the old town is five to ten minutes away; many guesthouses collect guests for free if you send your flight details.
If you plan to drive to Bo Kluea or Doi Phu Kha, the mountain roads are steep and winding. Allow plenty of time, avoid driving after dark, and consider a local driver.
Cool season and the Nan River long-boat races
The cool season, November to February, is the best time, with clear mountain views and cold mornings at altitude. Around the end of Buddhist Lent, Nan holds its long-boat races on the Nan River, a big local event worth timing a trip around if you can find a room.

Nan Nakhon Airport (IATA NNT, ICAO VTCN) has a terminal built in 2014 beside the existing runway. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn attended its opening ceremony on 15 February 2015.
