Bangkok to Sakon Nakhon flight guide
Both airlines fly Bangkok to Sakon Nakhon nonstop, and both use Don Mueang (DMK). The 524 km trip takes a little over an hour and ends at a compact airport on the north-eastern edge of town, 15 to 20 minutes from the centre.
The detail that shapes this route is the clock at the far end. Sakon Nakhon Airport keeps roughly 06:00 to 18:00 hours, so every flight runs in daylight and there is no late-evening fallback if your connection into Bangkok slips. If you are flying in from abroad, note that neither airline flies to Sakon Nakhon from Suvarnabhumi; allow at least four hours to cross the city and check in again at Don Mueang Terminal 2.
Both are low-cost carriers based at Don Mueang, and both sell their cheapest tickets without checked baggage. Compare the two with the bag you actually need added, because the gap between them often changes once luggage is included. Departure times differ between the airlines, so the timetable in the search usually decides it.
Sort out cash and a ride in advance. The official aerodrome listing shows no bank on site, so withdraw baht in Bangkok. Taxis and pickup drivers wait for most flights, and a limousine and car rental kiosk inside the terminal books cars and vans. Meters are not always switched on, so agree the price to your hotel before you set off.
Sakon Nakhon is known for Wat Phra That Choeng Chum in the centre of town, for Nong Han, the largest natural lake in the north-east, and for indigo-dyed cotton. Nakhon Phanom and the Mekong are about an hour further east by road. The cool, dry season from November to February is the easiest time for the lake and the Phu Phan hills; the rains arrive around May and last into October.
Sakon Nakhon Airport (SNO) is a shared civil and military airfield in That Na Weng subdistrict. The Royal Thai Army owns it, the Royal Thai Air Force flies from it, and the Department of Airports runs the passenger side. In 2025 it handled 348,600 passengers on 2,402 aircraft movements, all on the two Don Mueang services.
A 2018 government budget report listed the airport for expansion and a future transfer to Airports of Thailand, the company that runs Don Mueang, Phuket and Chiang Mai.
Nok Air was set up in February 2004 and flew its first service on 23 July 2004. Its aircraft carry a painted bird's beak on the nose, and its current fleet is Boeing 737-800s with 189 seats, with six 737 MAX 8s on order. Don Mueang is its main base, and it has further bases in Chiang Mai and Phuket.
Thai AirAsia started flying in February 2004 too and is the larger of the two, with 62 Airbus A320 and A321neo aircraft in August 2025. It is a joint venture in which Thailand's Asia Aviation holds about 55 percent and Malaysia's AirAsia about 45 percent.
Don Mueang opened as an air force base in 1914 and is the operating base of both airlines. In 2025 it handled 31.65 million passengers, 19.4 million of them domestic. Terminal 2, where Sakon Nakhon flights leave, is the domestic building; Terminal 1 handles international flights, and a third terminal is planned. If your trip continues from Suvarnabhumi, the transfer between the two Bangkok airports takes about an hour to an hour and a half by rail or bus.
