Bangkok to Chumphon flight guide
Chumphon is the shortest sea crossing to Koh Tao, and that is why most people fly there. Both airlines fly from Don Mueang (DMK), the route's only Bangkok airport, and the trip covers about 381 km in about 55 minutes. Nok Air returned to the route in November 2024 after a break.
Lomprayah has a counter in the Chumphon terminal selling a joint ticket: a coach of about an hour to its pier at Thung Makham Noi, south of town, then a catamaran that reaches Koh Tao in under two hours. A morning flight from Don Mueang connects with it and gets you to Koh Tao in the afternoon. Tickets also continue to Koh Phangan and Koh Samui. Book online ahead in busy months, and check the coach timing against your flight before buying either.
Chumphon Airport is a small Department of Airports terminal in Pathio district, about 35 km north of Chumphon town. There is no public bus to town, so if you are staying on the mainland use a taxi or minivan, Grab (drivers are few), a rental car from one of the two counters, or a pre-booked car. Allow 30 to 45 minutes to town. The terminal has an ATM, a café and a small shop. Our Chumphon Airport guide covers the rest.
Chumphon itself is quiet and easy-going, with beaches at Thung Wua Laen and Sai Ri to the north and east of town.
Both airlines are low-cost, so basic fares include a cabin bag only. Divers with kit should buy checked baggage in advance. Domestic flights at Don Mueang use Terminal 2; if you land in Bangkok at Suvarnabhumi, allow at least an hour for the road transfer. The Don Mueang airport guide explains the Red Line and buses.
The Gulf side of southern Thailand gets its heaviest rain from October to December, when sea crossings can be rough. February to September is generally the better time for Koh Tao's diving and snorkelling.
Chumphon Airport is 35 km north of downtown Chumphon, so allow for that drive when matching a flight to a ferry. The airport reopened in 2008 after nine years of closure.
We check practical details such as entry rules, seasons and costs against official government and tourism sources.
Both airlines fly nonstop from Bangkok Don Mueang (DMK) to Chumphon (CJM). The 381 km flight takes about 55 minutes, and a coach and catamaran continue to Koh Tao.

Three tips for the Koh Tao connection.
The early Don Mueang departure lines up with Lomprayah's coach and catamaran, so you reach the island the same day.
Lomprayah's ticket covers the coach to Thung Makham Noi and the boat. The counter is in the terminal, or book online ahead.
There is no public bus. Book a car or rental, or be ready to agree a taxi fare at arrivals.
Train and bus both take most of a day to Chumphon. The flight plus Lomprayah gets you to Koh Tao by the afternoon.
