Chowmuhani travel guide
Noakhali's wholesale markets and the road to the Gandhi Ashram
The main trading town of Noakhali District and centre of Begumganj Upazila. Most visitors come on business or change here for Maijdee and the Gandhi Ashram at Jayag; a few hours is enough, ideally between November and February. Check your passport's Bangladesh visa rules, as only some nationalities get one on arrival.
Chowmuhani is the commercial centre of Noakhali District and the seat of Begumganj Upazila, out on the low coastal plain of Chattogram Division. Its wholesale markets supply much of the district. From early morning the streets are jammed with trucks, rickshaws and traders.
Few travellers stop for long. The town is the transfer point for Maijdee, the district headquarters to the south, and for the Gandhi Ashram at Jayag in Sonaimuri Upazila, which marks the peace mission Gandhi led through Noakhali in 1946. Buses come in from Dhaka and Chattogram via Feni, and the Dhaka-Noakhali train stops here.

Getting there
Coach via Feni or the Noakhali train
The town lies off the main Dhaka-Chattogram highway, so most arrivals mean a change of direction at Feni, where the Noakhali road branches south-west. Direct coaches from Dhaka, mostly leaving from the Sayedabad area, run all the way to Chowmuhani and Maijdee, and buses from Chattogram follow the same highway north to Feni before turning off. The calmer option is the train: Chowmuhani has a station on the branch line that runs from Laksam junction down to Noakhali, and the Upakul Express, the intercity service from Dhaka's Kamalapur station, stops here: it leaves Dhaka in the afternoon and Noakhali at dawn, about five hours each way, with one weekly day off. Seats on it are in demand, so book through Bangladesh Railway's official ticketing site or at the station a few days ahead. Flying shortens nothing much: Chittagong's Shah Amanat airport is the closest, followed by a long road transfer via Feni.
- Coach from Dhaka
- Direct services from the Sayedabad area via the Dhaka-Chattogram highway and Feni
- Coach from Chattogram
- North along the highway to Feni, then the Noakhali road
- Train
- Upakul Express from Kamalapur via Laksam, stopping at Chowmuhani station
- Air
- Chittagong Shah Amanat (CGP), then bus or hired car via Feni
- Buy rail tickets several days ahead, especially around weekends and holidays; the Dhaka-Noakhali train sells out.
- Coaches drop passengers on the main road through town; tell the supervisor you want Chowmuhani, not Maijdee.
Where to stay
Market-side rooms or quieter Maijdee
Hotel choice in Chowmuhani is limited to plain business hotels, and where you sleep depends on what the trip is for. Traders and buyers stay close to the markets despite the dawn noise; anyone heading on to the coast does better a short drive south in the district town.
- Central Chowmuhani
- Next to the bus stops and wholesale lanes, convenient for business but loud from early morning
- Near the railway station
- Handy for an early train back to Dhaka, with the same basic standard of rooms
- Maijdee
- Calmer district town with more hotels and government offices, the better base for onward trips south
- Feni
- A fallback on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway if you are passing through and want to avoid the detour
- Ask for a room at the back of the building; front rooms on the main road catch truck horns from before sunrise.
Getting around
Easy-bikes, tempos and a reserved CNG to Jayag
The market core is compact enough to walk, though trucks loading and unloading make the pavements a scramble on weekday mornings. Cycle rickshaws are the default for anything further, and battery-powered easy-bikes now share the same streets. For Maijdee, shared CNG auto-rickshaws and small tempos leave from the main road and fill up quickly. For the Gandhi Ashram at Jayag and the Bajra Shahi mosque, both in Sonaimuri Upazila to the north, reserve a whole CNG for a half day and agree a return price, waiting time included, before setting off. There is no ride-hailing coverage worth relying on here, and no meters, so every fare is negotiated. Avoid road trips after dark, when unlit trucks and overloaded buses make the district roads risky.
- Cycle rickshaw or easy-bike
- Short hops around the markets and station
- Shared CNG or tempo
- Frequent runs south to Maijdee
- Reserved CNG
- Half-day trips to Jayag and Bajra, with a return fare agreed in advance
- Write the name of your destination in Bengali on a card; few drivers read English.

Weather in Chowmuhani, month by month
Month-by-month climate figures for Chowmuhani are being researched.
One day in Chowmuhani and Sonaimuri
A single day covers Chowmuhani and two sights to the north. Walk the wholesale bazaar at dawn while rice and spices are weighed, then hire a CNG for the half day to the mid-18th-century Bajra Shahi mosque and the Gandhi Ashram at Jayag in Sonaimuri, marking Gandhi's 1946 to 1947 peace walk. End in Chowmuhani or Maijdee.
A single day covers the town and the two sights worth the detour north. Start early, because the wholesale trade is a morning affair and by noon the action has moved from the market lanes to the loading trucks.
Early morning: walk the bazaar streets as sacks of rice, lentils and spices are weighed and hauled onto rickshaw vans. Stop for a glass of tea at a stall and watch the traders bargain. Nobody minds an onlooker, but ask before photographing people.
Late morning: hire a CNG for the half day and head north into Sonaimuri. The Bajra Shahi mosque, a three-domed Mughal mosque from the mid-18th century, stands beside a large tank and is the oldest building you are likely to see in the district. Dress modestly and remove your shoes if you are invited in outside prayer times.
Afternoon: continue to the Gandhi Ashram at Jayag, set up after Gandhi spent months walking village to village in Noakhali in 1946 and 1947 to calm communal violence. The trust that runs it keeps a small museum of photographs and his belongings, and the grounds are shaded and peaceful.
Evening: return to Chowmuhani or carry on to Maijdee for the night if you are heading for the coast and the islands of Hatiya and Nijhum Dwip.
Rice hotels, Meghna hilsa and shutki in a Noakhali market town
Chowmuhani's rice hotels open early for traders and porters, serving rice, dal, vegetable bhaji and fish curries, with hilsa from the Meghna estuary in the monsoon. Try shutki cooked into bhorta, paratha for breakfast and roshogolla or mishti doi from the main-road sweet shops, plus winter pitha after dark. Restaurants serve no alcohol.
Traders, drivers and porters are the customers here, and the town's eating houses are built around that. The cheap rice hotels near the markets open early and serve a full lunch by late morning: steamed rice, thin dal, a vegetable bhaji and curries of fish from the coastal rivers and ponds. In the monsoon months, when the catch comes in from the Meghna estuary, ilish (hilsa) turns up fried or cooked in mustard sauce, and it is worth asking for.
Shutki, the dried fish of the Bay of Bengal coast, is sold in the markets and cooked into fiery bhorta and curries; try it once even if the smell puts you off at first. Breakfast is paratha with fried egg or a bowl of lentils, and the sweet shops on the main road sell roshogolla, chomchom and pots of mishti doi for later.
In winter, look for women at the roadside making chitoi pitha and bhapa pitha over clay stoves after dark. Avoid raw khejur rosh, the date-palm sap sold on winter mornings, because of the Nipah virus risk. Restaurants serve no alcohol, and during Ramadan most stay shut until the evening iftar.

Visa & documents
Arrange a visa before you travel unless your passport is exempt, and make sure the passport is valid for at least six months beyond arrival. Some nationalities can get a visa on arrival at Dhaka airport, but confirm with an embassy.
Health & safety
Violent crime against visitors is rare. Your main risks are pickpockets in crowds, chaotic traffic and occasional political strikes (hartals) that shut roads at short notice. Call 999 for police, fire or ambulance.
