Kaliakair travel guide
Garment mills, a hi-tech park and the Chandra junction
A fast-growing industrial town in western Gazipur District, on the Dhaka-Tangail highway north-west of the capital. People come for work more than sightseeing; a short visit is enough, and November to February has the easiest weather. Some passports qualify for a Bangladesh visa on arrival.
Kaliakair is the upazila town in the west of Gazipur District, north-west of Dhaka, and with about 250,000 people it ranks among the larger cities in the country. Its growth has come from garment and textile factories strung along the Dhaka-Tangail highway, and more recently from the government hi-tech park built on the edge of town.
Visitors are almost all here for work. Chandra, the highway junction at the edge of town, is a notorious traffic bottleneck, so allow far more time than the map suggests. Hotels are basic, and most people stay in Gazipur or Dhaka.

Getting there
Two roads to Chandra
Two roads bring you here, and they meet at Chandra. The first leaves Dhaka from the Mohakhali bus terminal: Tangail-bound coaches head north through Tongi to Gazipur Chowrasta, then turn west on the Tangail road through the factory belts of Konabari and Kodda. The second runs north-west out of the city via Savar to Nabinagar and up the Nabinagar-Chandra road, a sensible choice from western Dhaka and the Gabtoli area. Which is faster depends on the day's jams, so ask your host. Coaches between Dhaka and Tangail, including those heading on over the Jamuna bridge, all pass through. From the airport, the Gazipur route is the natural one, since it runs straight north up the highway.
- Bus
- Mohakhali to Chandra on Tangail-bound coaches via Gazipur
- Road via Savar
- Nabinagar to Chandra, avoiding Gazipur
- Air
- Dhaka Hazrat Shahjalal (DAC), via Tongi and Gazipur
- Morning and evening shift changes in the Konabari and Chandra factory belts can double the time on the road; travel mid-morning if you can.
Getting around
CNGs between highway and town
Kaliakair is spread out, with the factories along the highway, the upazila town a short ride from Chandra, and the hi-tech park on the outskirts. CNG auto-rickshaws are the standard way between them; agree the fare first, and keep the driver's number for the return, as empty CNGs can be scarce at shift change. Battery rickshaws and cycle-rickshaws cover the town lanes. Local buses along the highway stop on demand but are packed at peak hours. For meetings at several sites, a hired car with driver for the day saves a lot of waiting by the road.

- Rickshaw
- Short trips within town
- Hired car
- Best for a day of meetings across several sites

Why travelers love it

- Village roads away from the highway, with paddy fields and small markets.
- Tangail further up the highway, home of the handloom sari of the same name.
Good to know
- Chandra junction jams at shift changes; plan meetings to avoid crossing it at peak hours.
- Hotel choice is limited; Gazipur or Dhaka have far better options.

Timing a business day around the Chandra junction
Plan a day in Kaliakair backwards from Chandra, the junction where traffic builds. Leave Dhaka before seven or mid-morning to avoid the Konabari queues, group appointments by side of the highway, and eat at factory canteens or upazila town restaurants. Finish before the evening shift change, then head back to Gazipur, which has more hotels.
Plan the day backwards from Chandra. If you are sleeping in Dhaka, leave before seven, or wait until the morning shift has started and set off mid-morning; either way you avoid the worst of the queues at Konabari and the junction. Coming from Gazipur city is shorter and usually easier.
Group your appointments by side of the highway, since crossing it can take longer than the drive between sites. Lunch is rice and curry from the canteens near the factories or the restaurants in the upazila town, plain but filling; meetings with larger firms often include a meal on site.
Aim to finish before the evening shift change, when buses, CNGs and thousands of workers on foot fill every lane around Chandra. If you are going on to Tangail, the onward road is quieter in the evening. Otherwise head back towards Gazipur, where the hotel choice is much wider than anything in Kaliakair.
Bhawal sal forest and the Tangail road for a spare half day
A spare half day in Kaliakair is best spent getting out of town. East towards Gazipur, Bhawal National Park has shaded sal-forest walks, quiet on weekdays. North-west up the highway, Tangail offers handloom saris at Pathrail and Porabari chomchom sweets. Neither trip is quick in traffic, so do one per day.
A spare half day here is best spent getting out of town. East towards Gazipur, Bhawal National Park offers shaded walks under the sal trees, quiet on weekdays and a welcome change from factory floors. Hire a CNG for the round trip and agree the waiting time.
The other direction leads up the highway to Tangail, the district that gave its name to the Tangail sari, a light cotton handloom weave. Pathrail, outside Tangail town, is the best-known weaving area, and shops there sell straight from the looms. Tangail is also the home of Porabari chomchom, an oval, syrupy milk sweet that Bangladeshis buy by the box to take home; sweet shops on the highway sell it, though the real thing comes from Porabari itself.
Neither trip is quick in heavy traffic, so start early and do not try both on the same day.
