Sreepur travel guide
Garment town on the Mymensingh highway, beside Bhawal's sal forest
An industrial town in northern Gazipur District on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, mostly visited for work. Bhawal National Park's sal forest is the main reason to stop. A day trip from Dhaka is enough, ideally between November and February. Some nationalities can get a Bangladesh visa on arrival; others apply ahead.
Sreepur is the upazila town in the north of Gazipur District, strung along the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway; the upazila had about 855,000 people at the 2022 census. Garment and textile mills line the road. It is a place built for work, not for visitors.
Bhawal National Park, the sal forest that stretches across the south of the upazila towards Rajendrapur, is the reason to stop. Shaded paths and picnic spots draw Dhaka families at weekends, so come on a weekday for quiet. Gazipur's large safari park is the other family outing in the same upazila.

Getting there
Up the Mymensingh highway
Almost everyone arrives by road. Buses for Mymensingh and the north leave Dhaka from the Mohakhali terminal and run up through Tongi and Gazipur Chowrasta, past the Bhawal forest, to the highway stops in Sreepur. Traffic through Tongi and Gazipur decides how long that takes, so start early. A hired car or ride-hailing booking gives you flexibility for a forest day, and from the airport it is a straight run north without crossing central Dhaka. The railway follows the same corridor: Sreepur and Rajendrapur stations are on the Dhaka-Mymensingh line, but mainly slower trains stop at them, so check the timetable before relying on rail.
- Bus
- Mohakhali terminal to Sreepur along the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway
- Rail
- Sreepur and Rajendrapur stations on the Mymensingh line, mostly slower trains
- Air
- Dhaka Hazrat Shahjalal (DAC), straight north up the highway
- The safari park at Baghher Bazar is beside the highway; ask a Mymensingh-bound bus to drop you there.
Getting around
CNGs to the forest gates
Sreepur's outings are spread along or just off the highway, not in town. CNG auto-rickshaws are the practical choice: hire one from town or from the highway stop for the round trip to a Bhawal National Park gate or the safari park, and agree the waiting time as well as the fare. Battery rickshaws and cycle-rickshaws handle the town and the lanes into the villages. Inside the national park, walk; stick to the main tracks, as village paths criss-cross the forest and it is easy to get turned around. At the safari park, the park's own caged buses carry visitors through the enclosed animal sections.

Sal shade in the morning, safari buses after lunch
Treat Sreepur as a day out from Dhaka. Leave by seven to beat factory traffic through Tongi and Gazipur Chowrasta, walk Bhawal National Park's sal forest in the cool morning on a weekday, then take the family to the safari park at Baghher Bazar after lunch. Buy jackfruit from highway stalls in early summer.
Treat Sreepur as a day out, not a stay. Leave Dhaka by seven to get through Tongi and Gazipur Chowrasta before the factory traffic builds, or take a morning train on the Mymensingh line if the timetable suits. Spend the morning in Bhawal National Park, walking the shaded tracks under the sal trees while the air is cool. Pick a weekday if you can; on Fridays the picnic groups arrive by the busload, with loudspeakers.
Bring food and water, or settle for the snack stalls by the gates. After lunch, families usually move on to the safari park at Baghher Bazar, where caged buses run through the big-animal enclosures, while others take a CNG along the back roads, where paddy fields alternate with patches of woodland. In early summer, buy jackfruit from the highway stalls; Gazipur is one of the country's main growing areas. Start back before the evening shift change, when the highway south fills with buses and workers heading home.
Bhawal's sal forest near Sreepur
Bhawal National Park is a remnant of the sal woodland that once covered the land between Dhaka and Mymensingh, on what was the Bhawal estate. Expect shade, birdsong and quiet, not big wildlife, since the forest is fragmented. Walk ten minutes past the picnic spots, stay on the main tracks and leave before dusk.
The forest you walk through in Bhawal National Park is a remnant of the sal woodland that once covered much of the land between Dhaka and Mymensingh. Sal is a tall hardwood that drops its leaves in the dry season, so the park looks quite different in late winter, when the floor is carpeted with brown leaves, from the dense green of the monsoon. Much of this land once belonged to the Bhawal estate, whose zamindars ruled from Joydebpur, today's Gazipur city.
Do not expect big wildlife; the forest is fragmented and surrounded by factories and villages. The pleasure is shade, birdsong and quiet, which is rare this close to Dhaka. Winter is picnic season, and on holidays the main picnic spots near the gates are noisy. Walk ten minutes deeper and the crowd drops away. Stay on the main tracks, carry your rubbish out, and leave before dusk, as the park is poorly lit and the highway is no fun after dark.

Only snack stalls near the gates. Bring a packed lunch and water for a longer walk.
Timing & weather
Roughly May to July, when roadside sellers between Gazipur and Sreepur stack the fruit in heaps.
Visa & documents
Arrange a visa before you travel unless your passport is exempt, and make sure the passport is valid for at least six months beyond arrival. Some nationalities can get a visa on arrival at Dhaka airport, but confirm with an embassy.
Health & safety
Violent crime against visitors is rare. Your main risks are pickpockets in crowds, chaotic traffic and occasional political strikes (hartals) that shut roads at short notice. Call 999 for police, fire or ambulance.
