Victory Day, Bangladesh guide
Victory Day on Wednesday 16 December 2026 is Bangladesh's most joyful patriotic day, marking the end of the Liberation War in 1971. Visitors in Dhaka see aircraft overhead, armed forces displays and red and green lights on buildings after dark. Expect road closures, and check programme timings, which come out only a few days ahead.
Victory Day celebrates 16 December 1971, when Pakistan's army in the east surrendered in Dhaka and the Liberation War ended after nine months. It is a national holiday and the most openly joyful of Bangladesh's patriotic days, the date when independence stopped being a declaration and became a fact.
Where 26 March leans toward mourning, 16 December leans toward celebration. Aircraft cross the sky over the capital, the armed forces put on displays, and red and green lights cover public buildings after dark.
The day also honours the freedom fighters themselves. Their families are received by the head of state, veterans lay wreaths at the national memorial, and songs from the wartime radio station are sung across all 64 districts.

Hotels near the venue fill up around the event dates.
Flypasts and parachute jumps draw crowds to every open space and rooftop around Tejgaon. Do not climb onto unsecured roofs or walls for a better view, and keep children away from parapets. Bring sunglasses and a hat: the displays start late in the morning and the sky can be bright.
Traffic around Tejgaon slows to a crawl before the displays, so walk the last stretch or arrive by metro.
On Victory Day 2025 children's parks and museums opened without tickets, and Liberation War films were shown free to students. Ships at Sadarghat and other river ports were open to the public from 9 am until sunset.
Freedom fighters are honoured guests on this day. If you meet veterans at Savar or Suhrawardy Udyan, greet them respectfully and ask before taking photographs. Stay out of party political arguments, which run hot around national days. Stand during the national anthem and keep quiet at the memorial. Wreath-laying groups from parties and organisations get priority on the path at Savar, so step aside when they come through.
In 2025 an acrobatic show and a procession named for General Osmani were held at Suhrawardy Udyan on 15 December.
The President and the head of government lay wreaths at sunrise (6:34am in 2025), followed by families of war heroes, veterans, diplomats and then the public.

Victory Day is spread across Dhaka, and the city's traffic punishes anyone who tries to see everything. Think of the day as three zones: the memorial out of town, the military displays in the middle of the city and the park where the war ended. Pick two and you will have a full, comfortable day.
Aircraft and parachutes are visible across a wide area, so a rooftop near Tejgaon serves well. Ask your hotel whether its roof will be open. Keep the day loose: timings are released only a few days ahead, and road closures shift with the official programme. Banks close for the holiday, so draw money the day before.
The war that began in March 1971 ended nine months later on the racecourse at the heart of Dhaka. On 16 December Lt Gen Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, commander of Pakistan's forces in the east, signed the Instrument of Surrender in front of Lt Gen Jagjit Singh Aurora of the joint Indian and Bangladeshi command, with thousands of people looking on. The ground is now Suhrawardy Udyan.
Spend time there. The park holds the Swadhinata Stambha, a 150-foot glass tower set over an underground Independence Museum, and the eternal flame Shikha Chirantan, which marks where Sheikh Mujibur Rahman gave his 7 March speech. Murals along the complex follow the struggle from 1948 to 1971.
Its reach goes beyond the battlefield. Bangladesh's constitution came into force on 16 December 1972, and India marks the same day as Vijay Diwas. The National Parade Ground has its own record: in 2013, 27,117 volunteers formed a giant human flag there. A three-day Victory Fair is held in every district and upazila.
Flights land at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, about 17 km north of the centre, including routes such as London to Dhaka. Use the prepaid taxi kiosk or a ride-hailing app.
Links Uttara with Motijheel, so you can move between the display area and the park without the roads.
In 2024 police closed the Gabtoli and Amin Bazar Bridge road from 3:30am to 9:30am for the state motorcade and sent traffic via Airport Road, Abdullahpur and Ashulia Road. Allow plenty of time.
CNG autos and rickshaws, at fares agreed first.
For the airfield displays, a hotel around Farmgate or Karwan Bazar keeps you close to Tejgaon; ask whether its roof will be open.
For the cultural side, stay near Shahbag, where Suhrawardy Udyan, the university and the museums are a short walk apart.
