Nilphamari to Dhaka flight guide
Flights from Saidpur to Dhaka link Saidpur Airport (SPD) in Nilphamari with Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC) in about 55 minutes, nonstop over 261 km. Various airlines fly it: Biman Bangladesh Airlines, US-Bangla Airlines, NOVOAIR and Air Astra. It is the air link to the capital for much of Rangpur Division, including Rangpur, Dinajpur and Panchagarh.
Departures spread across the day. US-Bangla's ATR 72-600 leaves daily at 08:45, 10:15 and 20:45. Air Astra flies at 11:50, 15:45 and 18:50, NOVOAIR at 10:15 every day plus 18:00 from Thursday to Saturday, and Biman's Dash 8-400 runs BG492 at 08:35 on five days and an evening flight on others. Each airline allows 20 kg of checked baggage.
That spread helps if Dhaka is only a stopover. For an evening international departure, an early afternoon arrival leaves a safe margin for the terminal change at Shahjalal.
Saidpur is a railway town at heart. It grew up around the Saidpur Railway Workshop, founded in 1870 and still the largest in the country. Passengers from Rangpur and Dinajpur drive in for their flights, so leave proper time for the road.
Winter brings fog to the north. In the coldest weeks, morning flights can be held until visibility lifts, and a late morning or afternoon flight is the safer choice when you have a connection.
Bangladeshi passengers need a National ID card for this domestic flight and foreign nationals a passport. You land at the domestic terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal in Kurmitola.

Getting there
It can. Thick fog settles over the northern districts in the cold months, and the first departures of the day are the ones most likely to be held. If you have an onward international flight from Dhaka, pick a later departure from Saidpur in winter and leave extra time between the two.
That is the plan. Once the airport upgrade is finished, it is expected to handle services to eastern Nepal, with Biratnagar or Bhadrapur named as likely destinations. No such route is on sale yet, so travellers bound for Nepal still go through Dhaka.
Yes. Several intercity trains run from Saidpur to the capital every day, which fits the town's long railway history. Rail takes many hours longer than the 55-minute flight, so anyone with a connection to catch in Dhaka is better off in the air.
Only if both flights are on the same ticket. With a single booking, the bags are tagged to your final airport and you walk from the domestic terminal to international departures without them. With two separate bookings, you claim the luggage in Kurmitola and check it in again on the international side.
Biman, with the 74-seat Dash 8-400. Air Astra and US-Bangla use the ATR 72-600 with 72 seats, and NOVOAIR the 68-seat ATR 72-500. The difference is small, and all four cabins are economy only, so departure time usually decides the choice.
Up to 20 kg in the hold on a standard fare, plus 7 kg in the cabin, and the figure is the same with Air Astra, US-Bangla, NOVOAIR and Biman. Promotional tickets can carry less. A sack of rice soon uses up that allowance, and any excess is billed at the counter.
Since 1979, when it opened as a domestic airport. Air travel came more than a century after the railway workshop that built the town, and today the airfield is the main way to fly to much of Rangpur Division.
Yes. An upgrade that began in 2018, on 912 acres of acquired land, is meant to stretch the runway from 6,000 ft to 12,000 ft so that larger jets can land. Until the work is complete, only turboprops serve the airport.
General
Roughly half of the town's people are Biharis, Urdu speakers with close family ties to Bihar in India. That makes Urdu one of the everyday languages of the town.
Yes. US-Bangla operates a direct service between Saidpur and Chattogram, which spares business travellers from the north a change in Dhaka. Biman also links Saidpur with Cox's Bazar, handy for a beach trip straight from the north.
