London to Dhaka flight guide
Biman Bangladesh Airlines is the only airline flying from London Heathrow (LHR) to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka (DAC) without a change of plane. Its Boeing 787-8 covers the 8,014 km in about 9 hours 35 minutes on a nonstop. Most of its London flights stop in Sylhet first, which makes the trip about 11 hours 35 minutes, and families visiting relatives fill a large share of the seats.
Biman runs about five flights a week on BG202 and BG302. If your family is in Sylhet, a flight that stops there saves the onward domestic leg from Dhaka. If you plan to break the journey in Sylhet on a ticket booked to Dhaka, ask Biman first whether the fare allows it. Air Astra, Novoair and US-Bangla all fly from Osmani to Dhaka for the last leg.
Biman lists Manchester among its UK airports as well, which can save families in the North West or Yorkshire the trip south. Check whether that flight continues to Dhaka before booking.
The 787-8 has 271 seats, and with one nonstop airline and many families travelling together, booking ahead of school holidays makes sense. Economy includes 46 kg of checked baggage plus 7 kg in the cabin, enough for a suitcase of presents.
Heathrow is about 23 km, or 14 miles, west of the centre. Heathrow Express runs nonstop from Paddington to Terminals 2 and 3 in 15 minutes and to Terminal 5 in 21; it does not call at Terminal 4. The Elizabeth line serves Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5 through three stations, with six trains an hour at Terminals 2 and 3 and four at Terminal 4, and accepts Oyster and contactless. Travel between terminals on the rail links is free.
Many families with two large cases each prefer a minicab or a relative's car, but road traffic around the airport is unpredictable, so leave well ahead of the check-in deadline.
Dhaka is five hours ahead of London in British summer and six in winter. The UK moves to UTC+1 from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October, while Bangladesh stays on UTC+6.
Travellers on British passports need a Bangladesh visa or, for those of Bangladeshi origin, a No Visa Required endorsement before flying.
Shahjalal is in Kurmitola, about 17 km north of the centre. Terminal 3 was inaugurated in a first stage on 7 October 2023, with a soft opening set for 16 December 2026 and full operations for March or April 2027; once complete, capacity grows to 24 million passengers a year from 8 million, which should shorten immigration queues after a long-haul flight. Book a car through the official taxi kiosk or a ride-hailing app, and allow extra time on Airport Road at rush hour.
The raised toll expressway from Kawla is the quick road towards Gulshan or Farmgate; its 11.5 km first section has been open since September 2023 and the Karwan Bazar ramp since March 2024, with Banani exits on the way. A BRTC bus has run along it to Farmgate since 18 September 2023, though few people carrying 46 kg will want it.
For Chattogram or Cox's Bazar, domestic flights leave from the single-storey terminal to the left of the international buildings. Clear immigration and customs and collect your bags before checking in again.

Getting there
Heathrow Express runs nonstop, reaching Terminals 2 and 3 in 15 minutes and Terminal 5 in 21. It does not stop at Terminal 4, so for that terminal change to the Elizabeth line at Terminals 2 and 3. Travel between terminals on the airport rail links is free, which helps if you get your terminal wrong.
Heathrow is about 23 km, or 14 miles, west of the centre. With two large cases each, many families prefer a minicab or a relative's car, but road traffic around the airport is unpredictable, so leave well ahead of the check-in deadline.
Biman lists Manchester among the UK airports it serves from Sylhet, alongside Heathrow. For families in the North West or Yorkshire, that can save the trip down to London. Check the routing and if the flight continues to Dhaka before you book, as it may suit Sylhet better than the capital.
Ask Biman first if your fare allows you to end the journey in Sylhet, since a ticket booked through to Dhaka may not. If you do spend time with family there, Air Astra, Novoair and US-Bangla all run domestic flights from Osmani to Dhaka for the last leg.
There is a BRTC bus on the expressway from the airport to Farmgate, started on 18 September 2023. Few people arriving from London with the full 46 kg allowance will want it, but it is handy for anyone travelling light.
Only in part so far. It was inaugurated in a first stage on 7 October 2023 and is still under construction. Once complete, the airport's capacity grows to 24 million passengers a year from 8 million today, which should mean shorter queues at immigration after a long-haul flight.
Timing & weather
Both, depending on the season. The UK moves to UTC+1 from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October and is on UTC+0 in winter, while Bangladesh stays on UTC+6. So Dhaka is five hours ahead in summer and six hours ahead in winter.
Booking
Biman's 787-8 has 271 seats. With only one airline flying the route nonstop and many families travelling together, it is worth booking well ahead of the school holidays.
General
The raised toll expressway from Kawla next to the airport is the quick option. Its 11.5 km first section to Farmgate has been open since September 2023, and the Karwan Bazar ramp since March 2024. Banani exits serve the northern districts on the way.
Domestic flights depart from the single-storey terminal to the left of the international buildings. Bangladeshi carriers including Biman, US-Bangla, Novoair and Air Astra are based at the airport. Clear immigration and customs and collect your 46 kg before checking in again.
