Bangkok to Phuket flight guide
Phuket is the busiest leisure route out of Bangkok, and you can fly it from either city airport. Various airlines use Suvarnabhumi (BKK); two use Don Mueang (DMK); Thai AirAsia flies from both. It is about 675 km in a straight line and roughly 1 hour 20 minutes in the air.
The flight is the short part. What eats the day is the road at each end, so it pays to plan both transfers before you look at fares.
Suvarnabhumi is the better choice if you are arriving from abroad on the same ticket, or if you want a full-service airline. Thai Airways flies the route 63 times a week in its winter 2026/27 schedule, and Thai AirAsia is back at Suvarnabhumi since 1 October 2026 with Phuket as one of its three domestic routes there. Don Mueang is the home of the low-cost airlines; domestic flights leave from Terminal 2, and the SRT Red Line stops next to the airport.
Phuket International Airport is at Mai Khao on the north-west coast, which surprises people who assume it is near Patong. Patong is about 38 km away by road, roughly 50 to 60 minutes by taxi in normal traffic, and Phuket Town is about 32 km. Domestic flights arrive at the Domestic Terminal, next to the international building. The Phuket Smart Bus leaves from near the domestic arrivals exit and runs down the west coast through Surin, Kamala, Patong, Karon and Kata to Rawai; it is slow but cheap. An hourly airport bus leaves from in front of the arrivals exit between 08:15 and 20:15 and goes via Boat Lagoon and Central to the old bus station in Phuket Town. A separate Airport Bus Express runs to Patong Beach from 08:00 to 20:00, through Thalang and Kathu, and shared vans cover Patong, Karon and Kata for solo travellers. If you land late, the resorts at Nai Yang and Mai Khao, minutes from the runway, save a long night drive.
The dry season runs from November to April, with calm seas on the Andaman side and the highest demand around Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year. From May to October the southwest monsoon brings heavy showers and big swells, and red flags often close the west coast beaches to swimmers. Flights keep going all year.
Beach trips mean bags. Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways include a checked bag in standard economy; on Thai AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air and Thai VietJet Air the basic fare covers cabin baggage only, so add a hold bag when you book.
The car rental companies at Phuket airport are on the first floor, and Airports of Thailand's Sawasdee app has advance-booking prices. A car pays off if you want to explore beyond the west coast beaches, to the east coast or the island's quieter north. Cars are returned at the counter at the front of the terminal.

Multiple airlines fly the route. Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways and Thai VietJet Air go from Suvarnabhumi, Nok Air and Thai Lion Air from Don Mueang, and Thai AirAsia from both.
Most holiday travellers check a bag. It is included on Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways standard economy fares and is an add-on with the low-cost airlines.
Plan the ground transfers along with the flight.
The airport is at the island's northern tip. Add a full hour by taxi to the west coast beaches, more on the Smart Bus, before you book an evening dinner or tour.
Seats on the Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year dates go first. Fixed dates in those weeks are worth booking months ahead.
Nai Yang and Mai Khao have quiet resorts close to the runway. A night there beats a long drive south in the dark.
There is no railway to Phuket, so the only overland option from Bangkok is a long bus ride.

Most visitors stay on the west coast at Patong, Kata or Karon, or in quieter Kamala, Surin and Nai Yang; Phuket Town suits those who prefer old shophouses and food to beaches.
