Bangkok to Sukhothai flight guide
Bangkok Airways is the only airline to Sukhothai, flying from Suvarnabhumi (BKK) to the airport it built and owns. The route covers about 407 km and takes about 1 hour 15 minutes on an ATR turboprop.
Plan around a winter break. Bangkok Airways has announced that it will suspend Bangkok to Sukhothai from 10 December 2026 to 28 February 2027. Flights run until 9 December and are due back from 1 March 2027. During the gap, the nearest alternative is Phitsanulok (PHS), about 58 km from Sukhothai, served from Don Mueang by Nok Air, Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air; add about an hour by road.
Sukhothai Airport is worth seeing in itself. Its buildings are open-sided pavilions with tiled roofs on heavy pillars, modelled on Sukhothai-era architecture, and the design won the Association of Siamese Architects' prize in 1998. The rice fields around the runway are farmed organically. A passenger lounge is open to all Bangkok Airways travellers, and standard economy fares include a checked bag. Read more in our Sukhothai Airport guide.
The airport is out in Sawankhalok district: about 27 to 35 km from New Sukhothai and around 40 km from the Historical Park. There is no taxi rank or public bus. A shared minivan, sold at the transfer counter in arrivals, meets each flight and drops at hotels in the new town and near the ruins. A car with driver is the other option, and it lets you stop at Si Satchanalai Historical Park, which is closer to the airport than Sukhothai town is.
Because the flight departs from Suvarnabhumi, you can connect from an international arrival without changing airport. Bangkok Airways passengers can also use the airline's lounges in Concourse A. See the Suvarnabhumi airport guide for transport to the airport.
The cool, dry months from November to February are the best time for cycling between the ruins, and Loy Krathong in November is the park's biggest night of the year. With the suspension starting 10 December, November is the month to fly direct this winter.
Bangkok Airways began building Sukhothai Airport in 1992 and flew the first service on 12 April 1996. It is still the airline's own airport.
