Bangkok to Chiang Mai flight guide
Several airlines fly nonstop from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, split between the capital's two airports. A number of airlines leave from Suvarnabhumi (BKK), Nok Air and Thai Lion Air from Don Mueang (DMK), and Thai AirAsia flies from both. The cities are about 596 km apart and the flight takes about 1 hour 15 minutes.
The cheapest seat is no bargain if it leaves from the wrong side of Bangkok. Suvarnabhumi sits about 25 to 30 km east of the centre and is the one to use if you are connecting from an international flight on a Thai Airways ticket, because you stay in the same terminal. Thai Airways is the heaviest operator on the route: its winter 2026/27 timetable lists 63 Chiang Mai flights a week, trimmed to 49 a week from 1 February 2027. Thai AirAsia returned to Suvarnabhumi on 1 October 2026, and Chiang Mai is one of only three domestic routes it flies from there.
Don Mueang, 24 km north of the centre, is the low-cost base. Domestic flights use Terminal 2, and the SRT Red Line station across the footbridge reaches Krung Thep Aphiwat in around 20 minutes, which helps when the tollway is jammed.
Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways include a checked bag in standard economy. Thai AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air and Thai VietJet Air sell their lowest fares with cabin baggage only and charge for a hold bag, which is cheaper when added online than at the counter. Cabin bags are weighed on the low-cost flights, so pack to the limit printed on your booking.
Chiang Mai International Airport is one of the closest big airports to a city centre in Thailand: about 3 km to the moat of the Old City. From the international terminal's Gate 12, airport shuttle vans run three set routes: A1 to Nimman Road, Huay Kaew Road and the Old City moat for 40 baht, A2 to Mahidol Road, the Night Bazaar and the Chang Khlan Road hotels for 40 baht, and A3 along Ring Road 2 to the 700th Anniversary Stadium for 60 baht. The Chiang Mai City Bus also calls at the airport on its yellow and red routes between 06:00 and 23:30, passing Tha Phae Gate, the Night Bazaar and Kad Suan Kaew. Red songthaew trucks wait as well and go wherever you agree.
November to February brings cool, dry air and the busiest flights, peaking around the Yi Peng lantern festival at the November full moon. From late February the smoke from crop burning in the hills thickens, and March and April are usually the haziest months. The rains run from about June to October, when the countryside is green and fares are easier.
Car rental desks are on the first floor of Chiang Mai airport, and cars go back to the counter at the front of the building. Booking through Airports of Thailand's Sawasdee app unlocks special rates, which is worth checking if you plan to drive out into the mountains of the north. Anyone with a lot of luggage can book an airport transfer in advance.

Full-service and low-cost airlines share the route. Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways and Thai VietJet Air use Suvarnabhumi, Nok Air and Thai Lion Air use Don Mueang, and Thai AirAsia flies from both.
Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways fares include a checked bag in standard economy. On the low-cost airlines a hold bag is an add-on, so compare the price with the bag included.
Three things that make this short flight go smoothly.
Arriving in Thailand on a Thai Airways ticket? Stay at Suvarnabhumi. Staying in north Bangkok or flying a low-cost carrier? Don Mueang is closer and its Red Line station is a short walk from the terminal.
The lantern festival and Loy Krathong fill hotels and flights in Chiang Mai. If your trip falls in that week, book the flight and the room together, well ahead.
Smoke from burning fields can hang over the valley for weeks. If you have health concerns or want mountain views, go between November and early February instead.
The overnight train and the long-distance bus both reach Chiang Mai, but each takes most of a day or a night.
| Mode | Journey time | Total trip time | One-way fare | Operators and timings |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flight | About 1h 15m | About 4 hours with airport transfers and check-in | Search fares | 6 airlines |
| Train | About 11 to 13 hours | Overnight in a sleeper berth | State Railway of Thailand from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal | |
| Bus | About 9 to 10 hours | Usually overnight | Long-distance coaches from Mo Chit bus terminal |
Most visitors stay inside or near the Old City moat, in the Nimman area to the west or along the Ping river near the Night Bazaar.

General
It depends on where you start and which airline you want. Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways and Thai VietJet Air only use Suvarnabhumi; Nok Air and Thai Lion Air only use Don Mueang; Thai AirAsia uses both. If you are staying in north Bangkok, Don Mueang is usually the quicker ride.
Yes, if the Chiang Mai flight leaves from Suvarnabhumi. A through ticket with Thai Airways keeps you in one terminal. A separate ticket from Don Mueang means clearing immigration, collecting bags and crossing the city by road, so allow several hours.
What's included
Standard economy on Thai Airways International and Bangkok Airways includes one. Thai AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air and Thai VietJet Air sell their cheapest fares without a hold bag, and adding it online is cheaper than paying at the airport.
Getting there
About 1 hour 15 minutes in the air for roughly 596 km. Door to door, with the airport transfer in Bangkok and check-in, most people spend about four hours.
The quickest way is the taxi counter in arrivals, which charges a flat fare to most addresses and takes 10 to 20 minutes. Grab and Bolt pick up at a marked area outside, and RTC bus route 24 runs through the Old City gates during the day.
Yes. Nimmanhaemin Road is on the west side of town, a short drive north of the airport, and RTC route 24 passes through the area. Late in the evening a taxi or ride-hailing car is simpler than the bus.
It is if you enjoy trains and have the time. The sleeper leaves from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal and takes about 11 to 13 hours, saving a hotel night. Book a berth early around Thai holidays.
They get very busy. The festivals fall around the November full moon, and seats and hotel rooms go early. Book well ahead if your dates are fixed.
Airports of Thailand advises at least two hours. Low-cost airlines close check-in strictly, and the queues in Terminal 2 can be long in the morning and evening peaks.
40 baht. Shuttle van A1 runs from Gate 12 of the international terminal to Nimman Road, Huay Kaew Road and the Old City moat; A2 to the Night Bazaar also costs 40 baht.
Timing & weather
Haze from crop burning usually builds from late February and is worst in March and April. Air quality can be poor for days at a time, so many travellers plan around it.
Visa & documents
Yes. Airlines check photo ID at check-in and boarding, and for non-Thai passengers that means a passport. Keep it with you rather than in a checked bag.
