Bangkok to Koh Samui flight guide
Only one airline flies nonstop from Bangkok to Koh Samui: Bangkok Airways, which leaves from Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and also from Don Mueang (DMK). The flight covers about 467 km and takes about 1 hour.
That near-monopoly has a history. Bangkok Airways built Samui airport, opened it in April 1989 and still owns and runs it, and the 2,100 m runway only takes narrow-body jets and turboprops. Thai Airways sells seats to Samui too, but they are on Bangkok Airways aircraft under a codeshare. The result is a pleasant, small-scale airport and fares that are usually higher than flights to Surat Thani on the mainland.
Most Samui flights leave from Suvarnabhumi, which is the place to connect if you arrive in Thailand on a long-haul flight. Book Samui on the same ticket, or on a Thai Airways codeshare, and your bags go through. Bangkok Airways passengers can use the airline's lounges there. The airline also runs Samui flights from Don Mueang, handy if you are staying in north Bangkok. Either way, standard economy includes a checked bag.
Samui International Airport is a group of thatched, open-sided pavilions in gardens at Bo Phut, on the north-east corner of the island. You may ride an open tram from the aircraft. Chaweng's northern end is only about 2 km away, 15 to 20 minutes by car to the centre. Taxis charge fixed prices by zone and do not use the meter, so agree the fare at the counter; shared minibuses sold in arrivals are cheaper and drop at hotels along the way. For Koh Phangan, Big Buddha Pier is a few minutes from the terminal, and Koh Tao ferries leave from Maenam, about 6 km away. The airport closes overnight, so a delayed evening arrival will not leave you stuck there.
Samui's seasons do not match Phuket's. The heaviest rain falls from about October to December, with November usually the wettest month, while January to April is dry and sunny and the middle of the year is often good too. That makes Samui a sensible choice when the Andaman coast is in its monsoon.
Samui International Airport is privately owned and was built by Bangkok Airways. Construction began in 1982 and the airport opened in April 1989. It now handles more than a million passengers a year, making it Thailand's seventh-busiest airport.

A few things specific to Samui.
Airport taxis use fixed zone prices, not the meter. Confirm the price at the counter, or take a shared minibus if you are travelling light.
Budget airlines fly to Surat Thani, and a bus and ferry ticket covers the rest. It is cheaper but adds three to four hours.
October to December is Samui's wet season. If you want sun, aim for February to April instead.
Overland, Samui means a train or coach to Surat Thani and then a ferry, a long day or a night.
