Flying from Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz to Dhaka

In short

Both airlines fly nonstop from Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madina (MED) to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka (DAC): Biman Bangladesh Airlines and Saudia. The 5,112 km flight takes about 6 hours 40 minutes, and nearly everyone aboard is a pilgrim ending Umrah near the Prophet's Mosque, with a short airport run as the last step.

Biman or Saudia?

Biman flies about six times a week on BG338 and BG538, with a Boeing 777-300ER or 787-8 and 30 kg of checked baggage. Saudia flies SV798 about five times a week on a Boeing 777-200 and allows 23 kg. Both allow 7 kg in the cabin. Boxes of Madina dates for every relative add up fast, so weigh the cases at the hotel.

Sealed 10-litre Zamzam packs and airline rules

Airlines normally accept Zamzam only in the sealed containers sold for the purpose, and rules differ by carrier, so check with yours before leaving the hotel. The standard pack is 10 litres, sold at the Kudai bottling plant's warehouse and in supermarkets across Saudi Arabia. It is meant for personal use; the Saudi authorities do not allow it to be exported for resale.

Madina's LEED Gold terminal run by TAV

The current terminal opened in July 2015 and was the first commercial airport terminal in the Middle East and North Africa to earn LEED Gold for its environmental design. TAV Airports runs it on behalf of the Saudi aviation authority. During the Hajj and Umrah seasons it also handles charter flights, so a group ticket may name a carrier other than the two regulars.

Pilgrims coming from Makkah can take the Haramain high-speed line, about 2 hours at 300 km/h. It ends at Madina's city station on King Abdulaziz Street-East, not at the airport, so plan a taxi for the last stretch and leave a buffer day before the flight if you can.

Summer heat and cold dawns for older pilgrims

Madina is very hot in summer, with average highs of 43 °C in June and July and 43.8 °C in August, and the city has recorded 49 °C. Keep older relatives indoors at midday. In winter, January nights average about 12.1 °C, so a light jacket helps before dawn and again in Dhaka, which averages around 19 °C in January.

Pilgrim coaches, apps and the prepaid taxi kiosk

Pilgrim groups are usually met outside the terminal by family or the agency's coach. If you travel alone, Uber and Pathao pick up at arrivals, and the prepaid taxi kiosk outside the international exit fixes the price before you set off, calmer than negotiating at the kerb with heavy cases. Uttara is the nearest part of the city.

For Rajshahi or another domestic destination, the separate Domestic Terminal sits beside the international one. Allow time to clear immigration, collect bags and any Zamzam, and check in again.

December and January see almost no rain in Dhaka, the easiest time to get boxes home dry. In the monsoon, wrap cartons in plastic before check-in.
