Flying from Colombo to Dhaka

In short

Flights from Colombo to Dhaka run nonstop from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) at Katunayake to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC) on SriLankan Airlines and FitsAir. The 2,166 km crossing of the Bay of Bengal takes about 3 hours 10 minutes. Passengers include Bangladeshi students and workers going home, Sri Lankan business travellers and tourists connecting through Colombo.

SriLankan flies UL189 every day, leaving at 07:50 on six days and at 09:00 on Wednesdays, and landing around 11:30 to 12:40 Dhaka time. It usually puts a wide-body Airbus A330 on the route, with an A320 on some days. FitsAir, the privately owned Sri Lankan carrier that joined the route in 2024, flies 8D931 daily on an Airbus A320, departing at 19:15 and arriving at 23:00.

The baggage gap matters if you are carrying gifts or tea home: SriLankan allows 30 kg in the hold and FitsAir 20 kg, with 7 kg of cabin bags on both. Dhaka is half an hour ahead of Sri Lanka.

Leave enough time for the drive out to Katunayake, about 32 km north of Colombo. The E03 expressway is the quick way there from the city, and an early start matters for the 07:50 SriLankan departure.

Hazrat Shahjalal is at Kurmitola in north Dhaka, about 17 km from the city centre. A kiosk near the international arrivals exit sells pre-paid taxis, which saves haggling after the late FitsAir landing. Anyone not travelling on a Bangladeshi passport should confirm visa rules with the Bangladesh High Commission in Colombo before booking.

At the Dhaka end, Hazrat Shahjalal's third terminal is planned to soft-open on 16 December 2026, with full use expected from March or April 2027. Until then, flights from Colombo arrive at the existing international terminal.

Getting there

All of them. The A330-300 has 28 business seats in a 1-2-1 layout, so every seat reaches the aisle; the A330-200 has 18, and the A320 has 16 in pairs. The A330-300 is the best of them for the trip, though SriLankan can switch aircraft, so check the booking again before you fly.
