Abu Dhabi to Sylhet flight guide
Flights from Abu Dhabi to Sylhet run nonstop from Zayed International Airport (AUH) to Osmani International Airport (ZYL) on Biman Bangladesh Airlines, the only carrier on the route. The Boeing 737-800 covers 3,748 km in about 4 hours 50 minutes. For Sylheti workers in the UAE it means landing close to home, with no domestic connection or long road trip from Dhaka.
The nonstop is weekly. BG228 leaves Abu Dhabi at 02:45 on Sundays and lands in Sylhet at 09:35. On other days, the choice is a flight to Dhaka or Chattogram and a domestic connection, or the bus north.
Biman's allowance is 30 kg checked and 7 kg in the cabin. With one flight a week there is little room to shop around, so book well ahead of Eid and the winter wedding season.
Osmani International Airport is on Airport Road, north of the city. The drive in runs past Malnicherra, one of the oldest tea estates in the country, and on to the area around the Shah Jalal shrine, where many of the hotels are.
Family members travelling on foreign passports need a Bangladesh visa or a No Visa Required endorsement arranged before the trip.

Visa & documents
The aircraft lands only at Osmani. Passport control, baggage reclaim and customs all happen in Sylhet, so your checked cases come off the belt there and you walk straight out to the family car. Nothing about this ticket routes you through Shahjalal.
Getting there
Look at the Abu Dhabi to Dhaka nonstops, which several airlines operate, then add a domestic hop up to Osmani. Booking both sectors on one ticket keeps your bags checked through; two separate tickets mean collecting luggage and checking in again at Shahjalal.
Two airport routes, A1 and A2, link the city centre with the terminal and run at all hours. The airport lies roughly 30 km east of downtown, so leave plenty of margin, especially with heavy cases for home. A taxi or a lift from your employer is simpler when you carry a full 30 kg.
Yes. Every airline, Biman included, moved into the new Terminal A by 14 November 2023, and the older buildings no longer handle passengers. Check-in counters, security and the gates for Sylhet are all under that single roof.
One of the hotels under Where to stay sits at Khadimnagar on Airport Road, a few minutes from arrivals, which suits anyone whose village is still a long drive away. Rooms in town near Dargah Gate put you closer to food and shops but add the ride through the city.
That is the economy limit included in the fare. Extra weight can usually be bought from Biman ahead of departure, which works out better than settling up at the Zayed check-in desk. Pack heavy items such as dates or electronics into the hand bag only if it stays within 7 kg.
Timing & weather
Yes. The UAE stays on UTC+4 through the year and Bangladesh uses UTC+6, so Sylhet clocks run two hours later than Abu Dhabi ones. Neither country changes time in summer, so the gap never shifts.
A Chinese contractor, Beijing Urban Construction Group, is building it, with completion targeted for December 2027. Once open it should lift capacity to about 2 million passengers a year. Until then, arrivals use the existing, much smaller hall.
Prices & payment
Biman fits its 737-800s with a small business section ahead of economy, so a premium seat can be bought on this route when the airline sells it. Ask Biman what the premium fare includes for baggage before paying, since the 30 kg figure quoted for this route is the economy one.
General
Biman started a direct Sylhet to Cox's Bazar service in 2020, the first Bangladeshi domestic link that bypassed the capital. If it is running on your dates, a family beach trip can begin right after you get home, though it has to be bought as a separate domestic ticket.
The airport, once called Sylhet Civil Airport, was renamed in 1971 after General M. A. G. Osmani, who commanded the Bangladesh forces in the 1971 Liberation War. It gained international status in 2002, and a Biman service from Kuwait was its first overseas arrival.
