Dhaka to Rajshahi flight guide
Flights from Dhaka to Rajshahi run nonstop from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC) to Shah Makhdum Airport (RJH) at Nowhata, about 10 km north of the city centre. Both airlines fly the 192 km route, US-Bangla Airlines and Biman Bangladesh Airlines, and the flight takes about 50 minutes. It suits university visitors, silk and mango traders and families from the Padma towns.
US-Bangla flies the ATR 72-600 twice a day, with BS161 in the morning and BS165 in the late afternoon; the exact times move between schedule seasons, from 07:15 to 10:00 for the morning flight. Biman uses the Dash 8-400. Its BG481 runs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, and BG483 leaves at 18:00 on four days a week. Both airlines list 20 kg of checked baggage and 7 kg in the cabin.
With only two or three flights a day, seats go quickly around the Eids and in the mango season, when traders and visitors pour into the district. Book a week or two ahead for those dates.
Rajshahi spreads along the north bank of the Padma, close to the Indian border. People fly in for the University of Rajshahi, the second-oldest public university in the country, for the silk trade that gave the city its Silk City nickname, and in season for its mangoes.
Keep an afternoon for the Varendra Research Museum, the oldest museum of its kind in Bangladesh, with medieval sculpture from the surrounding Barind country.
This is a domestic flight, so Bangladeshi travellers check in with a National ID card and foreign visitors with a passport. Hotels in Ganakpara and on the Kazihata riverside are a short CNG or car ride from the terminal.

General
The Banalata is the only nonstop train on the corridor and needs about 5 hours 45 minutes from Dhaka, with a pick-up at the Airport railway station on the way out of the capital. It does not run on Fridays. Flying wins when the day is short; the train is more relaxed and spares you two airport transfers.
For a no-frills stay, yes. The Parjatan Motel on Abdul Majid Road in Sapura is government-run and priced as a budget option. Expect plain rooms without hotel extras, which suits travellers out sightseeing all day.
US-Bangla's ATR 72-600 has 72 seats and Biman's Dash 8-400 has 74, all in economy. With so few airlines and two small aircraft types on the route, there is less spare capacity than on busier domestic routes, so book early for fixed dates.
No. Both list 20 kg of checked luggage and 7 kg in the cabin on standard economy fares. If you plan to bring back crates of mangoes or bolts of silk, weigh them before heading to the airport, since anything over the limit is charged at check-in.
Getting there
Yes. NOVOAIR links Shah Makhdum Airport with Cox's Bazar, one of the few domestic services in Bangladesh that skips Dhaka entirely. That makes a Rajshahi stop and a beach break possible on one trip: fly in from the capital, then head south to the coast without doubling back.
Shah Makhdum Rupos, a Sufi saint closely linked with Rajshahi. The name appears on boarding passes and signs, while tickets and timetables usually just say Rajshahi or the code RJH.
The government announced in November 2024 that the airport would be redeveloped into an international one. For now the runway measures 1,829 m and only domestic turboprops use it, so travellers heading abroad still connect through Dhaka.
Two flying academies use Shah Makhdum as their training base, so light single-engine aircraft practise take-offs and circuits between airline movements. It does not affect passengers, though you may notice them parked on the apron when you land.
Stay & facilities
Yes. Two of the hotels under Where to stay have pools: an upscale city-centre property with an outdoor pool, and a hotel at Kazihata with a pool and a gym a short walk from the Padma. The riverside option suits anyone who wants an evening stroll along the embankment.
Prices & payment
Ganakpara has two simple, central hotels among those under Where to stay, and a popular mid-range hotel is a step up. Parking is tight at some of them, so if you are hiring a vehicle for the Barind countryside, check before booking.
